Wholesale Customer vs Wellness Advocate: which dōTERRA account do you need?

The two dōTERRA account types compared: price, fees, obligations, what changes if you want to share the oils, and how to switch later.

The enrollment form asks one question that stops many people: Wholesale Customer or Wellness Advocate? The names suggest a big difference. In practice the difference is small, reversible, and comes down to one thing: do you want the option to earn commissions, or not.

What both accounts give you

Both are memberships with the same wholesale price, 25% below retail, on every product. Both can use the optional Loyalty Rewards Program and get 10–30% of each order back in points. Both order from the same warehouse in your country, get the same promotions and the same free product of the month when they qualify. Neither has a monthly minimum.

Wholesale Customer

This is the plain customer account. You buy at wholesale and that is all. There is no way to earn money on it, and therefore nothing about sales or teams in your back office: no reports, no downline, no business e-mails. Renewal is a small annual fee that comes back as a free bottle of Peppermint.

Choose it if you are buying for yourself and your household. This is the majority of members.

Wellness Advocate

This is the business account. It keeps everything above and adds the ability to enroll other people under your number and receive commissions on their orders. It also unlocks the business side of the back office and access to business promotions. The enrollment fee and renewal are the same as for a customer in most markets.

Choose it if you already know you want to share the oils and earn from it. Do not choose it “just in case”: the business account has extra terms (the Policy Manual for advocates) and in some countries a tax registration step for paying out commissions. For a person who only wants the discount it is needless paperwork.

The comparison

Wholesale Customer Wellness Advocate
Wholesale price (25% off) Yes Yes
Loyalty points (LRP) Optional Optional
Monthly minimum None None
Enroll others / earn commissions No Yes
Business reports in back office No Yes
Extra agreements No Advocate policy; tax form in some markets
Can switch later To Advocate, any time To Customer, on request

Switching later

A wholesale customer can upgrade to Wellness Advocate at any moment from the account settings; the discount and the order history stay. Going the other way is also possible through customer support. So the safe default is Wholesale Customer: you lose nothing by starting there.

A note on markets outside the US

In some markets the form offers a third option, Preferred Member, with a 20% discount and no annual renewal. It exists for people who order a few times a year and never want to think about the membership. If you order more than once or twice a year, the 25% account wins.
