The first five essential oils for your home: where to start without a kit
If a starter kit feels like too much, here are five dōTERRA oils that cover most everyday uses: Lavender, Lemon, Peppermint, Tea Tree and Frankincense (or On Guard as a cheaper fifth). Eight to ten uses for each, diffuser recipes, safety notes, how long a bottle lasts and whether five singles beat the Family Essentials kit.

The Home Essentials kit is the right first step for most people, but not everyone wants ten bottles and a diffuser at once. Maybe you already have a diffuser, maybe the budget is tighter this month, maybe you do not yet know whether oils will stick in your home. Five bottles that cover most of what people keep oils for is a sensible way in, and this is the list we give when someone asks “which five”.
In short: Lavender, Lemon, Peppermint, Tea Tree and Frankincense at wholesale come to about $176 in the US (or swap Frankincense for On Guard and pay about $136), every one has eight to ten everyday uses, and a 15 mL bottle lasts six to twelve months. Below: what each oil is for, how to dilute it, three diffuser recipes, and an honest comparison with the Family Essentials kit.
Why these five and not a kit
Every oil on the list does at least three different jobs: diffuser, cleaning, skin or laundry. They are also five of the ten oils in the Home Essentials and Family Essentials kits, so if you later want the full set, nothing is wasted — you already know half of it.
The list assumes an open dōTERRA wholesale customer account: 25% off retail, no minimums, no selling, valid for a year. In the US the enrollment fee is currently waived; in Europe it is €24 (or free with a first order of 150 PV, about €180); elsewhere roughly the price of one bottle. Without an account five bottles cost about $234 at retail instead of $176. How the account works is in dōTERRA wholesale account explained.
1. Lavender: the gentlest and the one to buy first
The oil everyone starts with, for good reason: a soft, clean floral scent that even “I don’t like fragrances” people tolerate, and the only one on this list you can put on skin neat in small amounts. dōTERRA’s Lavender comes from Bulgaria; it takes roughly 100 kg of flowers to make a litre, which is why the bottle is $29 wholesale ($38.67 retail; €37 wholesale / €49.33 retail in Germany) rather than $5.
Everyday uses:
- Three or four drops in the diffuser half an hour before bed.
- A drop on the pillow corner or on a tissue inside the pillowcase.
- Two drops in a tablespoon of carrier oil for skin after the sun or after shaving.
- A drop on a small cut or an insect bite, neat.
- Five drops on a wool dryer ball or a cotton pad in the laundry basket.
- Two drops in a bowl of hot water for a face steam.
- A drop rubbed into the palms and inhaled before a difficult call.
- Five drops in 100 mL of water in a spray bottle for linen and curtains. Safety: the mildest oil in the catalog. Still, keep it out of eyes and use half the dose for children.
2. Lemon: the household workhorse
Cold-pressed from Sicilian lemon peel, and at $15.50 wholesale (€18 in Germany) one of the cheapest bottles in the catalog, so it is the one you do not mind pouring. It turns a spray bottle of water and vinegar into something you actually enjoy cleaning with.
Everyday uses:
- Ten drops in 250 mL of water with a splash of white vinegar for counters, glass and the fridge shelves.
- Two drops on a cloth to lift sticker residue, marker and grease from the hob.
- A drop on a cotton pad in the fridge, the bin cupboard or a shoe cabinet.
- Three drops in the morning diffuser with two of Peppermint.
- A drop in a glass of water where the label in your market allows internal use.
- Two drops in the dishwasher before the cycle.
- Five drops in the wash with towels that smell musty.
- A drop on the wooden cutting board after washing. Safety: Lemon is photosensitive. Skin where it was applied should stay out of the sun for 12 hours, and on skin it should always be diluted. Do not use it on lacquered wood or plastic in concentrated form — it dissolves the finish the same way it dissolves glue.
3. Peppermint: energy and cool
Grown in Washington State, $26 wholesale, and the one oil where a single drop is genuinely enough. It is also the free bottle dōTERRA sends every year with the account renewal.
Everyday uses:
- Two drops in the office diffuser mid-afternoon.
- A drop diluted in 10 mL of carrier oil on the temples and the back of the neck on a hot day.
- A drop on a tissue in the car on a long drive.
- One drop in a glass of water for a fresh taste where the label allows.
- Three drops in a foot bath after a day on your feet.
- A drop diluted on the shoulders after sport, together with Lavender.
- Two drops on a cotton pad near the entrance where mice or ants show up.
- A drop in a cup of hot water and inhaled in a stuffy room. Safety: a strong oil. Not on the skin of children under six, extra caution during pregnancy, and keep it well away from the eyes — wash hands after handling the bottle. Diluted, it feels cool; neat on sensitive skin it can burn.
4. Tea Tree (Melaleuca): the medicine-cabinet scent
Clean, sharp, herbal. Of the five it is the most versatile for home and body and the one that ends up in the bathroom rather than the diffuser. $26 wholesale for 15 mL.
Everyday uses:
- A drop diluted on a skin blemish in the evening.
- Two drops in a handful of shampoo for an itchy scalp.
- Ten drops with ten of Lemon in 250 mL of water as a bathroom spray.
- A drop on the toothbrush handle and in the toothbrush cup once a week.
- Five drops in the wash with gym clothes and socks.
- A drop diluted around a nail after a manicure.
- Two drops on a cloth for the yoga mat and the inside of trainers.
- A drop in the mop bucket. Safety: dilute on skin, and never take it internally. Keep it away from cats, who cannot metabolise it.
5. Frankincense: the expensive one people end up loving
Resin from Boswellia trees in Somaliland and Oman, harvested by hand and sourced through dōTERRA’s Co-Impact programme, which is part of why it costs $79 wholesale ($105.33 retail). It is the bottle beginners hesitate over and the one they most often say they would buy again: warm, woody, slightly sweet, and one of the few oils most adults can apply neat.
Everyday uses:
- Two drops in the evening diffuser with three of Lavender.
- A drop neat on the face after moisturiser, or a drop in the night cream.
- A drop on the wrists before meditation or a quiet half hour.
- A drop diluted on dry cuticles and heels.
- Two drops in a tablespoon of carrier oil for a hand massage.
- A drop rubbed into the palms and inhaled slowly.
- A drop in the bath with a spoon of Epsom salt.
- Two drops with two of Peppermint in the study diffuser.
Safety: neat on skin is fine for most adults; patch-test on the inner arm first. Use half doses on children.
The cheaper fifth: On Guard. If $79 is too much for a first order, take On Guard instead — the protective blend of Wild Orange, Clove, Cinnamon, Eucalyptus and Rosemary, about $39 wholesale. Warm and spicy in the winter diffuser, the base for a homemade hand and surface spray, a drop in tea where the label allows. Frankincense can come in the second or third order, once you know how often the diffuser actually runs.
The five at a glance
| Oil | US wholesale, 15 mL | Drops per bottle | Main uses |
|---|---|---|---|

| Lemon | $15.50 (retail $20.67) | ≈ 250 | Cleaning spray, fridge, sticker residue, morning diffuser |
| Peppermint | $26 | ≈ 250 | Focus, cooling on skin, car and travel, foot bath |

| Frankincense | $79 (retail $105.33) | ≈ 250 | Face care, evening diffuser, meditation, dry skin |

Three diffuser recipes that work
For a standard 100 mL ultrasonic diffuser, running 30–60 minutes:
- Morning, kitchen: 3 drops Lemon + 2 drops Peppermint. Bright, sharp, wakes up the room.
- Evening, bedroom: 3 drops Lavender + 2 drops Frankincense. Half an hour before bed, then off.
- Fresh air, whole house: 3 drops Tea Tree + 3 drops Lemon. After cooking fish, after guests, on a damp day.
If you took On Guard instead of Frankincense, the evening blend becomes 3 drops Lavender + 1 drop On Guard: warm rather than woody, and just as calm.
Safety, dilution and how long a bottle lasts
The rule that covers most situations: 1–2 drops of essential oil per 10 mL of carrier oil (fractionated coconut oil, jojoba, almond) for adults, half that for children, and a patch test on the inner arm for anything new. Lavender and Frankincense are the exceptions that most adults can use neat in single drops; Lemon, Peppermint and Tea Tree are not.
| Oil | On skin | Special note |
|---|---|---|
| Lavender | Neat in small amounts | Gentlest of the five; half dose for children |
| Lemon | Always diluted | Photosensitive: no sun on the area for 12 hours |
| Peppermint | Always diluted | Not on children under six; keep from eyes |
| Tea Tree | Always diluted | Never internally; keep away from cats |
| Frankincense | Neat OK for most adults | Patch-test first |
A 15 mL bottle holds roughly 250 drops. At three or four drops a day in the diffuser that is two to three months; used a drop at a time on skin, in the laundry or in a spray bottle it lasts six to twelve months. In a typical home Lemon goes first, then Lavender; Frankincense and Peppermint are usually still half full a year later. Store the bottles capped and away from the window.
Five singles or the Family Essentials kit?
The honest answer depends on bottle size. Five full-size singles at wholesale in the US: $29 + $15.50 + $26 + $26 + $79 = $175.50, no fee. The Family Essentials kit: all ten core oils — the five above plus Oregano, On Guard, Breathe, DigestZen and Deep Blue — in 5 mL bottles, $135, fee included. Home Essentials, where the warehouse has it, is the same ten in 15 mL plus a diffuser: €328 in Germany, £282 in the UK, 170,000 ₸ in Kazakhstan.
| Option | What you get | US price | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Five singles, 15 mL | 1,250 drops of exactly the oils you chose | ≈ $176 (≈ $136 with On Guard) | You know what you want and use a lot of it |
| Family Essentials | 10 oils × 5 mL ≈ 850 drops + fee | $135 | Trying everything, small household |
| Home Essentials | 10 oils × 15 mL ≈ 2,500 drops + diffuser | ≈ €328 / £282 | Daily diffuser, family, best price per drop |
Per drop, Home Essentials is cheapest by a wide margin; per bottle you actually open, the singles win, because nothing stays sealed. If at least six or seven of the ten kit oils interest you, take the kit; if you only want these five in full size, buy them separately. The kits by country are compared in which dōTERRA enrollment kit to choose, and the ten-oil kit in detail in Home Essentials kit review.
What to buy next and how to order the five
Once the five are in daily use, the next four people ask about are the other half of the kit. On Guard (if you did not take it as the fifth) for the winter diffuser and the hand spray. Breathe (Air in Europe) for the bedside diffuser on stuffy nights and the car. Deep Blue, the cooling blend, for shoulders and knees after sport — it comes as a 5 mL oil and as a rub. DigestZen (ZenGest in Europe) for travel and heavy dinners, where the label allows.
That is the moment to look at the Loyalty Rewards Program: an optional monthly template order that returns 10–30% in points and repeats until you cancel it, so check it before the processing date. Details in dōTERRA Loyalty Rewards Program explained.
Ready to order? Open a wholesale customer account through the form on the home page: pick your country, choose “no kit” (in the US the “Start Shopping” button, in Europe “Continue without a kit”), then add the five bottles to the same first order. Every screen is in the step-by-step guide. Buy from your country’s official warehouse, not a marketplace — at half price the bottle is almost always a fake, as how to spot fake dōTERRA shows in detail. Not sure which five suit your home? Questions and answers
Do I need an account to buy just five oils?
No, but it pays off from the first order: a wholesale customer account gives 25% off every bottle for a year, and in the US enrollment is currently free. Five bottles at retail cost about $234, at wholesale about $176.
Which single oil should I buy if I can only afford one?
Lavender. It is the gentlest, the most versatile and the one that works in the diffuser, on skin and in the laundry. Lemon is the second: at $15.50 it is one of the cheapest bottles in the catalog and does most of the cleaning.
Can I put essential oils directly on my skin?
Lavender and, for most adults, Frankincense can go on neat in small amounts. Lemon, Peppermint and Tea Tree should always be diluted: 1–2 drops per 10 mL of carrier oil such as fractionated coconut oil.
How long does a 15 mL bottle last?
About 250 drops. At three or four drops a day in the diffuser that is two to three months; used a drop at a time on skin or in cleaning it stretches to six to twelve months. Most people finish Lemon first and Frankincense last.
Is Frankincense worth $79?
For a beginner, not necessarily. It is the oil people end up loving most, but if the budget is tight, take On Guard at about $39 as the fifth bottle and add Frankincense in a few months. Or take the Family Essentials kit, where all ten oils including Frankincense cost $135 in 5 mL bottles.
Is it better to buy five singles or the Family Essentials kit?
If you want full-size 15 mL bottles of exactly these five, buy them separately for about $176. If you want to try all ten core oils for $135 and decide later, Family Essentials wins. Home Essentials at about €328 is the best value per drop but is a bigger commitment.
Can I use these oils around children and pets?
Lavender in the diffuser is generally fine; Peppermint should not go on the skin of children under six; keep the diffuser in a ventilated room, run it for 30–60 minutes rather than all day, and let pets leave the room. When in doubt, ask your paediatrician or vet and read the label for your market.
