Tea Tree is the bathroom-cabinet oil. Few people diffuse it for pleasure, but almost everyone who owns a bottle uses it: for a blemish, in a cleaning spray, in smelly trainers. It is the most utilitarian of the everyday oils and one of the most useful.
In short: Melaleuca alternifolia, steam-distilled from the leaves of the Australian tea tree, with a fresh, sharp, slightly medicinal smell. It costs $26 wholesale in the US and £25 in the UK, is used mainly in skin care routines and for cleaning and odours, and needs dilution and sensible storage because old oil irritates skin more.
What it is and where it comes from
Tea tree is a small, papery-barked tree native to the swampy coastal areas of New South Wales. Aboriginal Australians used the crushed leaves long before the oil was distilled commercially in the 1920s. dōTERRA’s oil comes from Australian plantations, where the trees are cut back almost to the ground and regrow quickly, so they can be harvested every year or two.
On some dōTERRA labels the oil is called simply Melaleuca, the name of the genus. It is the same product.
The main compound is terpinen-4-ol, usually around 40%. Good tea tree oil has a high terpinen-4-ol content and a low level of 1,8-cineole, the compound that makes cheaper oils smell more like eucalyptus and feel harsher on skin.
Aroma
Fresh, green and camphor-like, with a slightly spicy, woody undertone. Many people describe it as smelling like a clean pharmacy. It is not a mood oil, but blended with Lemon or Lavender it becomes perfectly pleasant in a room.
How people use it
On skin. Tea tree is the classic oil for blemish-prone skin in a daily routine. Mix one or two drops into a pea-sized amount of unscented moisturiser or into a teaspoon of carrier oil and dab on the area. Some people add a drop to their shampoo for the scalp or to a foot soak. For larger areas keep dilution low, about 1–2%.
In the diffuser. Not the most popular use, but useful when a room needs to feel clean:
| Blend | Drops | When |
|---|---|---|
| Tea Tree + Lemon | 2 + 3 | After guests or cooking |
| Tea Tree + Lavender | 2 + 3 | Bathroom, guest room |
| Tea Tree + Eucalyptus | 2 + 2 | Winter, stuffy house |
Around the house. Ten to fifteen drops in a 500 ml spray bottle of water with vinegar make a bathroom spray for tiles, shower screens and the toilet seat. Two drops on a cloth in the bottom of a sports bag, or a few drops on a cotton pad inside trainers overnight, deal with lingering odours. A drop in the final rinse of a sports kit wash is another favourite.
Safety
- Dilute for skin use: one to two drops per 10 ml of carrier, and patch-test on the inner arm first if your skin is reactive.
- Oxidised tea tree is a well-known skin irritant. Keep the cap closed, store away from heat and light, and use an opened bottle within roughly two years.
- Not for internal use, regardless of what you may read online; tea tree is toxic if swallowed.
- Keep away from eyes, ears and the inside of the nose.
- Keep out of reach of children and pets; cats in particular are sensitive to tea tree, so do not apply it to animals.
- Use in pregnancy only after asking a doctor.
Is it worth the price?
At $26 for about 250 drops, each drop costs roughly 10 cents, and because most uses need one or two drops, a bottle lasts a long time. Supermarket tea tree is often much cheaper, but quality varies widely: some oils are high in 1,8-cineole or have been diluted. Every dōTERRA batch is tested and the results are public at sourcetoyou.com under the lot number printed on your bottle.
Tea Tree in the starter kits
Tea Tree is one of the ten oils in Home Essentials and Family Essentials. If you were planning to buy Tea Tree, Lavender and Lemon anyway, a kit is the economical route; see which dōTERRA kit to choose. Tea Tree is also on our list of the first five oils for your home. For cleaning blends, it pairs naturally with Lemon and On Guard.
Where to buy it
Buy from the official dōTERRA warehouse in your own country at the price listed above, so the bottle is fresh and you can check its lot number. Marketplace bottles have often sat in hot storage for a long time, which for tea tree means oxidation; read how to spot a fake. Pick your country on the home page, or ask us.
Questions and answers
How much does dōTERRA Tea Tree cost?
In the US a 15 ml bottle is $26.00 wholesale and $34.67 retail; in the UK £25.00 / £33.32. Prices for ten countries, from the official October 2026 lists, are in the table above.
Is Melaleuca the same as Tea Tree?
Yes. Melaleuca is the botanical genus, and dōTERRA has used both names on its labels in different markets. The species is always Melaleuca alternifolia, the Australian tea tree.
Can I put Tea Tree directly on a spot?
Many adults dab a tiny amount on a single blemish, but the safer routine is to dilute it, one to two drops in a teaspoon of carrier oil or unscented moisturiser. Neat or old, oxidised tea tree is a common cause of skin irritation.
How long does Tea Tree oil keep?
Use an opened bottle within about two years and keep the cap firmly closed, away from heat and light. As tea tree oxidises it smells harsher and becomes more irritating to skin, so an old bottle is better used for cleaning.
Is Tea Tree included in a starter kit?
Yes. Tea Tree is one of the ten oils in Home Essentials (15 ml bottles plus a diffuser) and Family Essentials (5 ml bottles).
