Lemon is the practical one. Lavender ends up on the bedside table; Lemon ends up next to the kitchen sink, in a spray bottle and in the morning diffuser. It is cheap, it smells like clean, and it is the oil most people run out of without noticing.

In short: Citrus limon, cold-pressed from the peel of Italian lemons, with a bright, sharp citrus aroma. It costs $15.50 wholesale in the US and £15.50 in the UK, works brilliantly for cleaning and for lifting a stale room, and has one important rule: no sun on skin you have just applied it to.

What it is and where it comes from

Unlike most oils, Lemon is not distilled. The oil sits in tiny sacs in the outer peel, and it is pressed out mechanically, the same way the zest releases a spray when you bend a lemon skin. It takes around 45 lemons to fill one 15 ml bottle. dōTERRA sources much of its lemon from Sicily, where the fruit has been grown for centuries and processed by the same families who supply the juice industry, so the peel is a by-product of fruit that is eaten anyway.

The main component is limonene, often 60–70% of the oil. Limonene is a solvent, which explains why lemon oil cuts through grease and glue so well.

Aroma

Exactly what you expect: fresh lemon zest, sharp at first, then slightly sweet. It is lighter and less sugary than Wild Orange and does not linger for hours, so it works best as a top note or for quick freshening rather than as a long-lasting scent on its own.

How people use it

In the diffuser. Lemon is a morning oil. It also neutralises cooking smells better than most perfumed sprays.

Blend Drops When
Lemon + Peppermint 3 + 2 Morning, home office
Lemon + Lavender 3 + 3 Freshening a bedroom during the day
Lemon + Rosemary 3 + 2 Study or paperwork
Lemon + Eucalyptus 3 + 2 Winter, closed windows
Lemon + Tea Tree 3 + 2 After cooking fish or frying

Around the house. This is where Lemon earns its place. A simple all-purpose spray is 500 ml of water, a splash of white vinegar or alcohol, a few drops of washing-up liquid and 15–20 drops of Lemon. A couple of drops on a cloth remove crayon, chewing gum, sticker residue and greasy fingerprints from glass and stainless steel. Add a drop to the dishwasher rinse or to a bowl of water when you wipe down the fridge.

On skin. Lemon is used diluted (one to two drops per 10 ml of carrier) in an evening hand oil or a body scrub with sugar. Because of photosensitivity, it is best kept to products you use at night or on skin that will stay covered.

In the US. Many American users add a drop to a glass of water. If you do, follow the US supplement label and use glass, not plastic.

Safety

  • Photosensitivity: after applying Lemon to skin, avoid direct sun and UV for 12 hours. This applies even to diluted use on exposed areas such as the face, neck and hands.
  • Dilute for skin use, especially for children and sensitive skin; one to two drops per 10 ml is plenty.
  • Citrus oils can soften or cloud some plastics, including cheap diffusers and drinking bottles. Use glass or stainless steel containers, and test surfaces before cleaning.
  • Keep away from eyes; if it gets in, flush with carrier oil.
  • Citrus oils oxidise faster than most. Keep the cap tight and use an opened bottle within about a year.
  • Use in pregnancy or with medical conditions only after talking to a doctor.

Is it worth the price?

At $15.50 for roughly 250 drops, Lemon costs about 6 cents a drop, and a homemade cleaning spray works out at a dollar or so per bottle. That is one of the best value propositions in the whole range. Cheap lemon oils are frequently made from cheaper grades of peel or “extended” with synthetic limonene, which is hard to spot by smell. dōTERRA publishes the purity test results for every batch at sourcetoyou.com: type in the lot number from the bottom of your bottle.

Lemon in the starter kits

Lemon is one of the ten oils in Home Essentials and Family Essentials. If Lemon, Lavender and Peppermint are all on your list, the kit makes sense; see which dōTERRA kit to choose and the Home Essentials review. Lemon is also on our list of the first five oils for your home. For a sweeter citrus, compare Wild Orange; for an evening citrus, Bergamot.

Where to buy it

Order from the official dōTERRA warehouse in your own country, at the price shown in the table above. Lemon is one of the most frequently faked oils on marketplaces, precisely because synthetic limonene is cheap; read how to spot a fake before buying a bargain bottle. Choose your country on the home page to open the official wholesale form, or ask us if you have a question.

Questions and answers

How much does dōTERRA Lemon cost?

In the US a 15 ml bottle is $15.50 wholesale and $20.67 retail; in the UK £15.50 / £20.68. It is one of the least expensive oils in the range, and the table above lists ten countries from the official October 2026 price lists.

Can I go in the sun after putting Lemon on my skin?

Not straight away. Cold-pressed lemon oil is photosensitising, so keep treated skin out of direct sun and tanning beds for 12 hours. Diffusing it or using it for cleaning carries no such restriction.

Will Lemon oil really remove sticky labels?

Usually, yes. A few drops on a price sticker or tape residue, left for a minute and then rubbed with a cloth, dissolves most adhesives. Test on painted, lacquered or plastic surfaces first, because citrus oils can soften them.

Can I put Lemon oil in water?

It depends on your country's label. In the US dōTERRA Lemon is labelled as a dietary supplement; European and UK labels are written for aromatic and topical use. Follow the label printed on your bottle, and use glass or stainless steel rather than plastic.

Is Lemon included in a starter kit?

Yes. Lemon is one of the ten oils in Home Essentials (15 ml bottles plus a diffuser) and Family Essentials (5 ml bottles).
