Oregano is the strongest oil in the everyday range, and it should be treated that way. It is not something to dab on casually or diffuse by the handful. Used properly, though, it is a powerful cleaning ingredient and a traditional herbal oil that many experienced users would not be without.
In short: Origanum vulgare, steam-distilled from the leaves and flowering herb, rich in carvacrol, with a fierce herbal-spicy aroma. It costs $28 wholesale in the US and £30.76 in the UK, is used mainly for heavy-duty cleaning and very diluted, short-term topical use, and is a hot oil: never neat, never on children, never in pregnancy.
What it is and where it comes from
This is the same plant that goes on pizza, but the essential oil is a world away from the dried herb. Oregano grows wild on dry, stony Mediterranean hillsides, and the plants that develop the most intense oil are often those that struggle the most for water. The herb is harvested in bloom and steam-distilled.
The main compound is carvacrol, a phenol that typically makes up well over half of the oil. Phenols are responsible for oregano’s sharpness, both in smell and on skin, and are the reason the oil is so effective for cleaning tough surfaces.
Aroma
Hot, herbal and medicinal, like a concentrated version of dried oregano with a camphor edge. It is not a pleasant scent on its own for most people, and it lingers on hands and surfaces for hours. In very small amounts it adds a warm, spicy depth to cleaning blends.
How people use it
For cleaning. This is the safest and most common use. Two to three drops in a 500 ml spray bottle of water and vinegar, together with Lemon or Tea Tree, make a strong spray for bins, chopping boards (rinse afterwards), shower grout and spots where mould tends to return. Wear gloves when you handle the concentrate.
In the diffuser. One drop, always with gentler oils:
| Blend | Drops | When |
|---|---|---|
| Oregano + Lemon | 1 + 4 | Winter, ventilated room |
| Oregano + Wild Orange | 1 + 4 | Kitchen after cooking |
| Oregano + On Guard | 1 + 3 | Short session, then air the room |
Diffuse for 20–30 minutes, not all day, and not in a room where children, pregnant women or pets are present.
On skin. Traditionally oregano is used for short periods only, heavily diluted: one drop per 10–20 ml of carrier oil, applied to a small area such as the soles of the feet. If the skin turns red or feels hot, wash off with carrier oil, then soap.
Internally. In the US Oregano carries a dietary supplement label and is sold in capsules by some users. If you consider this, follow the US label exactly and talk to your doctor; European labels do not cover internal use.
Safety
- Never apply neat to skin. Dilute to one drop per 10–20 ml of carrier oil, and only for short-term use.
- Not for children: no topical use, and no diffusing in their presence.
- Avoid during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
- Keep away from eyes, mucous membranes and broken skin. Wash your hands after handling it.
- Oregano can interact with blood-thinning and diabetes medication; ask a doctor before any regular use.
- Keep the bottle well out of reach; even a small amount swallowed by a child is dangerous.
Is it worth the price?
At $28 for about 250 drops, a drop costs around 11 cents, and since most uses need a single drop, one bottle lasts a very long time. The real question is whether you will use it at all: for beginners, Lemon, Tea Tree and On Guard cover most cleaning needs. Oregano is worth having if you want an extra-strength option. Cheaper oregano oils are often thyme or Spanish oregano (Thymbra capitata) sold under the oregano name; dōTERRA’s test results by lot are at sourcetoyou.com.
Oregano in the starter kits
Oregano is one of the ten oils in Home Essentials and Family Essentials, which is how many people end up owning a bottle. Inside a kit it is a reasonable extra; on its own it is rarely the first oil to buy. Compare options in which dōTERRA kit to choose. For gentler cleaning, start with Lemon and Tea Tree; for diffusing in winter, On Guard.
Where to buy it
Buy from the official dōTERRA warehouse in your own country at the price shown in the table above. Oregano is often substituted on marketplaces with thyme or cheaper oregano species; read how to spot a fake. Pick your country on the home page to open the official form, or ask us.
Questions and answers
How much does dōTERRA Oregano cost?
In the US a 15 ml bottle is $28.00 wholesale and $37.33 retail; in the UK £30.76 / £41.00. The table above lists prices for ten countries from the official October 2026 price lists.
Can I put Oregano oil on my skin?
Only heavily diluted and only for short periods: one drop per 10–20 ml of carrier oil. Neat oregano oil can redden and burn skin within minutes, so it should never be applied undiluted.
Can I diffuse Oregano?
Yes, but one drop is enough, ideally mixed with milder oils such as Lemon or Wild Orange. On its own oregano is overpowering and can irritate the eyes and nose in a small room.
Is Oregano safe during pregnancy or for children?
No. Avoid Oregano during pregnancy and breastfeeding, and do not use it on children. If you have children at home, keep it out of reach and use it only for cleaning when they are not around.
Is Oregano included in a starter kit?
Yes. Oregano is one of the ten oils in Home Essentials (15 ml bottles plus a diffuser) and Family Essentials (5 ml bottles).
