Can you buy dōTERRA without a membership? Yes — here are your options
You can buy dōTERRA oils without becoming a member or a distributor: at retail on doterra.com, through a friend’s account, or as a gift. Why the customer account that gives 25% off is free or costs one bottle and obliges you to nothing, when paying retail actually makes sense, and a retail-vs-wholesale table for the most popular oils.

Short answer: yes. Nobody has to become a member, a distributor or a Wellness Advocate to buy dōTERRA. The oils are sold at retail on the company’s own site to anyone with a card and an address, and the “membership” people worry about is a customer discount card, not a commitment. The confusing part is that the cheapest way to buy is also the one that sounds like signing up for something. It is not, and this article explains why in plain terms.
The short version: buy at retail if you want one bottle once; open a free (or one-bottle-priced) Wholesale Customer account for anything more, because it gives 25% off, obliges you to nothing and goes dormant by itself if you stop ordering. Borrowing a friend’s account is the one route that only looks convenient.
What people mean by “membership”
dōTERRA sells through network marketing, so the word “member” carries baggage: monthly quotas, recruiting, a downline. Two very different things get mixed up here. A Wellness Advocate is the business account — the person who signs an agreement, may earn bonuses on orders from people they introduce, and declares that income. A Wholesale Customer is a customer with a discount: 25% off retail for a year, and nothing else. The advocate account exists and you will be offered it; you do not need it, and most accounts are customer accounts.
So “buying without a membership” really means one of three things: paying retail with no account, getting bottles through someone who has an account, or opening the customer account and deciding it does not count as a membership in any meaningful sense. We will take them in that order.
Option 1: retail on doterra.com, no account
Go to doterra.com, pick your country, add to cart, enter a shipping address, pay. No membership, no enroller, no forms beyond the address. The order ships from the same official warehouse as every other order, with the same return policy and the same lot number on the bottle that you can check at sourcetoyou.com. This is the honest, zero-commitment route, and it is fully legitimate.
The only drawback is price. Retail is 33% above wholesale, which is the same thing as saying wholesale is 25% below retail: Lavender 15 mL is $38.67 instead of $29.00, Peppermint $34.67 instead of $26, Frankincense about $105 instead of $79. On one bottle that is ten dollars; on a $150 order it is fifty. For a single bottle you want once, ten dollars is a fair price for not filling in a form. For anything more, it adds up quickly.
Option 2: through a friend’s account
Anyone with an account — customer or advocate — can order at wholesale and hand you a bottle. Advocates may also sell from their own stock at any price they choose, usually somewhere between wholesale and retail, and dōTERRA allows that. So if a friend offers to add your Lavender to her order, nothing terrible happens.
Why we do not recommend it as a way to buy regularly:
- It is against the policies the account holder agreed to. Accounts are personal, orders ship to the holder’s address, and repeatedly ordering for other people can get the account closed.
- You have no rights with dōTERRA. Returns, replacements and loyalty points belong to the account holder, not to you.
- You depend on their timing and see none of the promotions, BOGO weeks or the free product of the month yourself.
- You cannot verify the chain. A bottle handed to you is almost certainly genuine when it comes from a friend; from a stranger selling “from my account” on a marketplace, it may not be. How to spot a fake covers that risk.
And the decisive point: your own account is free in the US and costs one bottle elsewhere, so there is nothing to save by borrowing someone else’s.
Option 3: gifts and samples
The third way people end up with dōTERRA oils without any account is simply being given them. Advocates hand out sample vials, friends give a bottle for a birthday, dōTERRA itself sends a free 15 mL Peppermint with every annual renewal that members often pass on. If someone offers you a bottle, take it; it is the best way to find out whether you like the oils at all before deciding anything. A gift obliges you to nothing, and the person who gave it earns nothing from it unless you later enroll under them — which is your choice, not theirs.
Why the customer account is free (or nearly) and obliges you to nothing
This is the part that deserves plain language, because it is where the fear comes from. The Wholesale Customer account is dōTERRA’s equivalent of a warehouse-club card. Here is exactly what it does and does not involve:
- Cost. In the US, opening one is currently free. In Europe it is €24, in the UK £24, in Poland 108 zł, in Kazakhstan 9,260 ₸, in the UAE AED 130 — about one bottle of oil. If your first order is a starter kit, the fee is included in the kit; in Europe it is also waived when the first order is 150 PV (about €180) or more.
- Renewal. After twelve months the account renews for about $25 in local currency, and dōTERRA sends a free 15 mL Peppermint with it — worth more than the fee. If you do not renew, nothing happens: the account goes back to retail pricing until you decide otherwise. No debts, no reminders from a collections department.
- No minimum. You can order once a year or once a week. There is no quota and no “stay active” requirement for a customer.
- No subscription unless you turn it on. The Loyalty Rewards Program is optional and opt-in. It returns 10–30% of each order as points, but the template order repeats monthly until you cancel it, so join it only when you know you reorder anyway. How LRP works explains the template and how to cancel.
- Nothing to sell, nobody to recruit. A customer is a customer. You will not receive team e-mails, and nobody will call to “bring you into the business”. If you enroll under us, we are in touch only when you write to us.
That is the whole list. The account is described in more detail in the wholesale account explained, and the difference from the business account in Wholesale Customer vs Wellness Advocate.
When paying retail genuinely makes sense
We help people open accounts, so it would be easy to say “always enroll”. It is not always true. Retail is the right choice when:
- you want one bottle, once — a Lavender for the bedroom, a Peppermint for the car — and honestly do not expect to buy again this year; the retail premium on one bottle ($5–10 on most 15 mL oils) is less than the fee in most markets;
- you are buying a gift for someone who may or may not get into oils;
- you are in a market where the fee is charged and your order is under about $100, since below that the 25% does not cover the fee.
From the second bottle, or from any first order of $100 and up, the account is cheaper even in the year you open it, and every later order is at wholesale. The break-even is that simple.
Retail vs wholesale on the popular oils
US prices, 15 mL bottles, autumn 2026:
| Oil | Retail (no account) | Wholesale (customer account) | You save |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lavender | $38.67 | $29.00 | $9.67 |
| Lemon | $20.67 | $15.50 | $5.17 |
| Peppermint | $34.67 | $26.00 | $8.67 |
| Tea Tree | $34.67 | $26.00 | $8.67 |
| Frankincense | $105.33 | $79.00 | $26.33 |
| All five together | $234.01 | $175.50 | $58.51 |
Buy those five at retail and you have paid about $59 more than a member with a free account. Buy them inside a starter kit and you save again: kits are priced 20–40% below the same bottles at wholesale, and the fee is included. Which kit suits which household is in the kits comparison; if you want just a few oils, the first five oils for a home is a good starting list.
What enrolling actually looks like
Since the account is the recommendation for anyone buying more than once, here is what the five minutes involve, so there are no surprises. You open the official dōTERRA form for your country, choose Wholesale Customer (the default), enter your name, e-mail and shipping address, either pick a kit or add the fee plus the products you want, and pay by card, Google Pay or Apple Pay (in Europe also PayPal and SEPA direct debit or bank transfer). The form asks for an enroller number; our link fills that in, which changes nothing about your price and means only that we are the people who answer your questions. An e-mail arrives with your member number and a link to your account, the order leaves the dōTERRA warehouse serving your market (for Europe, the regional EU warehouse) within a day or two, and from then on you order through the account or the app at wholesale. Every screen is shown in the step-by-step guide.
Which one to pick
One bottle, once: retail on doterra.com — it is safe and official, just full price. A friend offers you a bottle or a sample: take it. Anything you expect to reorder even twice a year: the customer account, because the fee pays for itself on the first order and the discount stays.
Pick your country on the home page and the official form opens for your market with our enroller number already filled in. If anything in the form is unclear, or you are not sure whether retail or an account is the better choice for your order, write to us — we will do the sums with you and say honestly if retail is the better deal.
Prices are approximate, from the dōTERRA US price list in autumn 2026, and vary by country and over time. dōTERRA products are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease. This site is run by independent dōTERRA Wellness Advocates.
Questions and answers
Can I buy dōTERRA on doterra.com without an account?
Yes. Choose your country, add to cart, pay. You pay the retail price, which is 33% above wholesale — Lavender 15 mL is $38.67 instead of $29 in the US — and the order ships from the same official warehouse.
Do I have to become a distributor to get the discount?
No. The 25% discount comes with a Wholesale Customer account, which is a plain customer membership: no selling, no recruiting, no monthly minimum. The distributor account (Wellness Advocate) gives the same discount and is only for people who want to earn bonuses.
Does the wholesale account cost anything?
In the US it is currently free to open. Elsewhere it costs about one bottle — €24 in Europe, £24 in the UK, 9,260 ₸ in Kazakhstan — and the fee is included when the first order is a starter kit. Renewal a year later is about $25 and comes with a free Peppermint.
What happens if I open an account and never order again?
Nothing. There is no subscription unless you turn on the loyalty program yourself, no minimum and no penalty. After a year the account simply goes back to retail pricing until you decide to renew.
Can I just buy through a friend who has an account?
Your friend can order and hand you a bottle, and for a one-off gift that is fine. As a regular way to buy it breaks dōTERRA’s policies, gives you no return rights or points, and depends on their timing — while your own account is free or costs one bottle.
When does paying retail make sense?
When you want one bottle and do not expect to buy again for a year. The retail premium on one Lavender is under $10, which is less than the fee in most markets; from the second bottle, or any order over about $100, the account is cheaper.
Do I have to name an advocate when I enroll?
The form asks for an enroller. Our link fills it in automatically; it does not change your price and only means we are the people who answer your questions. Without one, the form assigns someone at random.
