Basil oil smells like crushing a fresh leaf between your fingers: green, sweet and a little peppery. It is a herb oil first, and it brings the feeling of a summer kitchen into the diffuser or the pot.

In short: basil oil (Ocimum basilicum) is steam-distilled from the leaves of sweet basil and is rich in linalool. A 15 ml bottle costs $33 wholesale in the US and £30 in the UK. People use it in the diffuser with lemon and rosemary, in cooking where the label allows, and in diluted massage blends; it should be diluted for skin and kept away from the eyes.

What it is and where it comes from

Sweet basil is an annual herb of the mint family, grown around the world for the kitchen. The leaves are steam-distilled to produce the oil. The oil is rich in linalool, a compound also found in lavender, which accounts for its soft, floral-sweet undertone beside the green herbal top. Many people are surprised by how closely the oil smells like the plant on a sunny windowsill.

Aroma

Fresh, green and herbal with a slightly sweet, almost anise-like warmth. It is brighter than rosemary and less sharp than peppermint. In the diffuser it reads as “clean kitchen herbs” rather than “perfume”.

How people use it

In the diffuser. Two or three drops give a gentle, green background to a room:

Blend Drops When
Basil + Lemon 2 + 3 Fresh kitchen scent
Basil + Rosemary 1 + 2 Desk or study, daytime
Basil + Lemon + Rosemary 1 + 2 + 1 Cleaning day, herby and bright
Basil + Lavender 1 + 2 Softer evening blend

In the kitchen. Where the label for your country allows food use, basil oil is a convenient way to get fresh basil flavour out of season. Dip a toothpick in the bottle and stir it into tomato dishes, pesto, salad dressings or a bottle of olive oil. Start with very little, because the oil is concentrated.

On skin. Diluted at one to two drops per 10 ml of carrier oil, it is used in massage blends, often together with lavender. Avoid the face.

Around the house. A drop on a cotton pad near the herb shelf or a wooden diffuser block on the desk adds a green note without a machine.

Safety

Basil is a concentrated herb oil, so keep these rules in mind:

  • Dilute for skin: one to two drops per 10 ml of carrier oil.
  • Patch-test on the inner arm and wait 24 hours, especially if your skin is sensitive.
  • Keep it away from eyes and mucous membranes.
  • In pregnancy, while breastfeeding or with medical conditions, ask a doctor first.
  • Keep the bottle out of reach of children, and diffuse only lightly around small children.
  • Pets, especially cats and birds, are sensitive to essential oils; ventilate the room and give animals a way out.
  • Use it in food only if your country’s label allows it, and in tiny amounts.

Is it worth the price?

A 15 ml bottle holds about 250 drops, so at $33 a drop costs roughly 13 cents (about 12 pence at £30). A diffuser session of three drops comes to around 40 cents. That puts Basil among the mid-priced oils: more than Lemon or Wild Orange, but a bottle lasts for months with light use.

If you cook a lot and like fresh herbs, it earns its place; if you only want a pleasant room scent, a citrus oil is cheaper. dōTERRA tests every batch, and lot number results are at sourcetoyou.com.

What to pair it with

Basil is not in a starter kit, and it works best with its neighbours from the herb and citrus families. Rosemary is the natural partner for a daytime scent, Lemon brightens everything and Lavender softens the herbal edge for the evening.

If you are just starting out, the first five oils for your home is a good base before adding herb oils.

Where to buy it

Buy directly from dōTERRA under your market’s terms: you pay the price in the table above, the parcel ships from the regional warehouse under your country’s rules, and the label tells you whether food use is allowed where you live. If your country is not an official dōTERRA market, you order through Global Access: the parcel ships from the US via a forwarding intermediary, with extra shipping and customs costs. Marketplace bottles at half price are a gamble; here is how to spot a fake. Pick your country on the home page to open the official form with the wholesale price, or ask us if anything is unclear.
