Douglas fir smells like walking into a forest after rain: fresh, green and a little lemony. It is the brighter, cleaner cousin of the more familiar pine scents, and it works well all year, not only at Christmas.

In short: Douglas fir oil (Pseudotsuga menziesii) is steam-distilled from the needles and twigs of the tree. A 5 ml bottle costs $24 wholesale in the US and £24.50 in the UK. People use it in morning diffuser blends with citrus, in cleaning sprays and in diluted skin blends after a hike; the point to remember is that it is not for food.

What it is and where it comes from

The oil is steam-distilled from the needles and twigs. Its main components are beta-pinene and bornyl acetate, which give it its crisp, fresh forest character.

dōTERRA sources its Douglas fir in New Zealand, where the tree is an invasive species, so harvesting it helps the local landscape. dōTERRA tests every batch of its oils, and the results for your lot number are published at sourcetoyou.com.

Aroma

Fresh, lemony-pine and clean, with a light, bright top and a soft woody finish. It is cleaner and brighter than Siberian fir, and less resinous than traditional pine. Many people find it energising and crisp rather than heavy.

How people use it

In the diffuser. Two or three drops make a bright, fresh room scent. Combined with citrus it is a good morning blend:

Blend Drops When
Douglas Fir + Lemon 2 + 3 Morning, kitchen or desk
Douglas Fir + Wild Orange 2 + 3 Bright afternoon
Douglas Fir + Cedarwood 2 + 2 Forest scent for the living room
Douglas Fir + Siberian Fir + Lemon 1 + 2 + 2 Winter, a full forest mood

Forest shower. Place one or two drops on the floor of the shower, away from the water stream, so that the steam carries the scent. Take care that the floor does not become slippery.

For cleaning. A few drops in a spray bottle with water and a little white vinegar or soap give surfaces a clean, pine-fresh scent. Test on a hidden spot first.

On skin. Diluted at one to two drops per 10 ml of carrier oil, it is used in a simple body oil after a hike or a long walk. Keep it away from the eyes.

Safety

Douglas fir is a mild oil, but the usual rules apply:

  • Not for food: use it only aromatically or diluted on skin.
  • Dilute for skin: one to two drops per 10 ml of carrier oil.
  • Patch-test on the inner arm and wait 24 hours if your skin is sensitive.
  • Keep it away from eyes and mucous membranes.
  • In pregnancy, while breastfeeding or with medical conditions, ask a doctor first.
  • Keep the bottle out of reach of children, and diffuse only lightly and briefly around small children.
  • Pets, especially cats and birds, are sensitive to essential oils; ventilate the room and give animals a way out.

Is it worth the price?

A 5 ml bottle holds about 85 drops, so at $24 a drop costs roughly 28 cents (about 29 pence at £24.50). A three-drop diffuser session comes to around 85 cents. That is more per drop than the common citrus oils, but a small bottle is enough for a season of forest-style blends.

If you already own Siberian Fir and like it, you may not need both; if you want something brighter and lemonier, Douglas fir is a good second tree. dōTERRA tests every batch, and the lot number results are at sourcetoyou.com.

What to pair it with

Douglas fir is not in a starter kit, and it is easy to combine. Its closest relative is Siberian Fir; together they make a full forest scent. For a grounding woody base, add Cedarwood, and for brightness, Lemon.

If you are just starting out, the first five oils for your home is a good base before adding more specialised bottles.

Where to buy it

Buy directly from dōTERRA under your market’s terms: you pay the price in the table above, the parcel ships from the regional warehouse under your country’s rules, and the label tells you whether food use is allowed where you live. If your country is not an official dōTERRA market, you order through Global Access: the parcel ships from the US via a forwarding intermediary, with extra shipping and customs costs. Marketplace bottles at half price are a gamble; here is how to spot a fake. Pick your country on the home page to open the official form with the wholesale price, or ask us if anything is unclear.
