TerraShield is the oil that goes in the picnic basket and the camping bag. It smells like a walk in a wood on a warm day: fresh, woody and herbal, with a faint creamy note at the end.

In short: TerraShield is the blend dōTERRA makes for outdoor use, built on ylang ylang, Nootka, cedarwood, catnip, lemon eucalyptus, litsea, arborvitae, vanilla bean absolute and tamanu in fractionated coconut oil. A 15 ml bottle costs $15 wholesale in the US and £15.50 in the UK. People use it as a few drops on exposed skin outdoors and in sprays; it is for topical and aromatic use only, never food.

What it is and where it comes from

TerraShield is a blend supplied in fractionated coconut oil. The ingredients are:

  • Ylang Ylang
  • Nootka
  • Cedarwood
  • Catnip
  • Lemon Eucalyptus
  • Litsea
  • Arborvitae
  • Vanilla Bean Absolute
  • Tamanu

Woody oils (Nootka, cedarwood, arborvitae) give the body, lemon eucalyptus and litsea add a fresh citrusy lift, ylang ylang and vanilla round it off, and tamanu and the coconut base make it feel like a light skin oil rather than a spray.

People use it as an alternative to synthetic outdoor sprays, which is why it is popular in summer. It is not a medicine and the page makes no guarantee about what it does or does not keep away; read the label of your bottle.

dōTERRA tests every batch of its oils, and the results for your lot number are published at sourcetoyou.com.

Aroma

Fresh and woody-herbal, with a clean lemon-eucalyptus top and a warm cedar base. Floral ylang ylang and vanilla soften it, so it smells more like a scented skin oil than a bug spray.

How people use it

On skin. A few drops on exposed arms, legs and the back of the neck, spread with the hands. Reapply every couple of hours outdoors, after swimming or after sweating. Keep it away from the eyes.

In a spray bottle. Add 15–20 drops to a 100 ml spray bottle with water and a spoon of alcohol or witch hazel, shake before each use and spray on clothes, hats or a picnic blanket (test the fabric first).

On the balcony or terrace. A few drops on a cotton pad or wooden diffuser block placed by the window or table gives a woody-fresh scent. In an electric diffuser, use two or three drops and keep sessions short, with the room open.

Where How much When
Exposed skin 3–5 drops Picnic, camping, walk
Spray (100 ml) 15–20 drops Hats, blankets, terrace
Cotton pad by the window 2–3 drops Balcony, garden table
Wooden diffuser 3–4 drops Porch or tent entrance

Safety

TerraShield is for outdoor and topical use, so:

  • Topical and aromatic use only. Never use it in food.
  • Patch-test on the inner arm and wait 24 hours.
  • Keep it away from eyes and mucous membranes.
  • Do not use it on babies or young children without asking a doctor; keep the bottle out of reach of children.
  • In pregnancy, while breastfeeding or with medical conditions, ask a doctor first.
  • Pets, especially cats and birds, are sensitive to essential oils; diffuse only for short sessions around them, ventilate the room, and never apply it to animals.
  • Wash your hands after use and before touching your face.

Is it worth the price?

A 15 ml bottle holds about 250 drops, so at $15 a drop costs roughly 6 cents (about 6 pence at £15.50). A skin application of four drops comes to around 24 cents. That makes it one of the cheapest blends in the range, and a bottle covers a full summer of outings.

Compared with single oils such as Lemongrass or Cedarwood, you get nine ingredients in one bottle already blended in a carrier, which is the point of buying it. dōTERRA tests every batch, and the lot number results are at sourcetoyou.com.

What to pair it with

TerraShield works well on its own. For outdoor and garden smells, Lemongrass and Cedarwood are natural companions. For freshening a tent, a car or a gym bag afterwards, Purify is the household blend that goes with it.

If you are just starting out, the first five oils for your home is a good base before adding seasonal blends.

Where to buy it

Buy directly from dōTERRA under your market’s terms: you pay the price in the table above, the parcel ships from the regional warehouse under your country’s rules, and the label shows the formula sold where you live. If your country is not an official dōTERRA market, you order through Global Access: the parcel ships from the US via a forwarding intermediary, with extra shipping and customs costs. Marketplace bottles at half price are a gamble; here is how to spot a fake. Pick your country on the home page to open the official form with the wholesale price, or ask us if anything is unclear.
