Cinnamon Bark is the strongest, hottest spice oil in the cupboard. One drop in a diffuser is enough to make a room smell like a bakery in December, and a bottle can last a very long time. It also demands more respect than most oils, so read the safety section before you open it.

In short: cinnamon bark oil (Cinnamomum zeylanicum) is steam-distilled from the bark of the cinnamon tree, and its main component is cinnamaldehyde. A 5 ml bottle costs $35 wholesale in the US and £30.50 in the UK. People use it in tiny amounts in winter diffuser blends, cleaning sprays and, where the label allows, in cooking; it is a strong skin irritant and must be heavily diluted.

What it is and where it comes from

Cinnamon trees are tropical evergreens, and the spice we know is the dried inner bark. For the essential oil, the bark is steam-distilled. The oil’s main component is cinnamaldehyde, which provides both the sweet, warm scent and the heat, and is the reason the oil is classed among the “hot” oils. In small doses that is a pleasure; undiluted it can burn the skin.

Aroma

Hot, sweet and spicy: unmistakably cinnamon, but deeper and more intense than the ground spice. It is also a little dry and woody. A single drop dominates a blend, so use it as a seasoning, not a main ingredient.

How people use it

In the diffuser. One drop is usually enough. Pair it with citrus or other spices and keep the sessions short:

Blend Drops When
Cinnamon + Wild Orange 1 + 4 Winter afternoons, living room
Cinnamon + Wild Orange + Clove 1 + 3 + 1 Festive baking scent
Cinnamon + Tangerine 1 + 3 Soft, sweet autumn blend
Cinnamon + On Guard 1 + 3 Cosy kitchen scent

Cleaning sprays. A drop or two in a spray bottle with water and a little vinegar or alcohol gives a spicy scent for wiping surfaces. Shake well each time, and test on a hidden spot.

In the kitchen. Where the label for your country allows food use, cinnamon bark is used in tiny amounts. Dip a toothpick in the bottle and stir it into a pot of porridge, baking dough or a hot drink. It is far stronger than ground cinnamon, so one dip is a lot.

On skin. Because it is so strong, many people skip topical use altogether. If you do use it, dilute heavily (see below).

Safety

Cinnamon Bark needs more care than almost any other oil in the range:

  • It is a strong skin irritant. Dilute heavily: one drop in at least 20 drops (1 ml) of carrier oil, and better with more carrier. Never use it undiluted.
  • Never use it on children’s skin or faces, and never near the eyes or mucous membranes.
  • Patch-test on a small area of the inner arm and wait 24 hours before any wider use.
  • Keep diffuser sessions short and the room ventilated; strong vapour can irritate the nose and throat.
  • In pregnancy, while breastfeeding or with medical conditions, ask a doctor first.
  • Keep the bottle out of reach of children, and use only the smallest amounts around small children.
  • Pets, especially cats and birds, are sensitive to essential oils; diffuse briefly and give animals a way out.
  • Use it in food only if your country’s label allows it, and in minimal amounts.

Is it worth the price?

A 5 ml bottle holds about 85 drops, so at $35 a drop costs roughly 41 cents (about 36 pence at £30.50). That is high per drop, but you use a single drop at a time, and often a drop in a blend with cheaper citrus oils. A diffuser session costs 41 cents plus the citrus.

If you love the smell of winter spice and want it all season, one bottle goes a very long way. If you only want a hint of spice, Wild Orange with Clove can get close for less. dōTERRA tests every batch, and lot number results are at sourcetoyou.com.

What to pair it with

Cinnamon Bark is not in a starter kit and almost always works in a team. Clove is its natural spice partner, Wild Orange is the classic citrus pairing, and On Guard, which already contains cinnamon, makes a spicy blend with a house-cleaning feel.

If you are just starting out, the first five oils for your home is a good base before adding strong spice oils.

Where to buy it

Buy directly from dōTERRA under your market’s terms: you pay the price in the table above, the parcel ships from the regional warehouse under your country’s rules, and the label tells you whether food use is allowed where you live. If your country is not an official dōTERRA market, you order through Global Access: the parcel ships from the US via a forwarding intermediary, with extra shipping and customs costs. Marketplace bottles at half price are a gamble; here is how to spot a fake. Pick your country on the home page to open the official form with the wholesale price, or ask us if anything is unclear.

Questions and answers

How much does dōTERRA Cinnamon Bark cost?

In the US a 5 ml bottle is $35.00 wholesale and $46.67 retail; in the UK it is £30.50 wholesale and £40.67 retail. The table above lists ten countries from the official October 2026 price lists.

How many drops are in a 5 ml bottle of Cinnamon Bark?

About 85 drops. Because the oil is so strong, one drop in a diffuser blend is usually enough, so a bottle lasts a long time.

Can I put Cinnamon Bark on my skin?

Only heavily diluted: one drop in at least 20 drops (1 ml) of carrier oil, and more carrier is better. It is a strong skin irritant, so never use it neat, never on children’s skin or on the face, and always patch-test first.

Can I use Cinnamon Bark in cooking?

Only if the label for your country permits food use. If it does, use tiny amounts, a toothpick dip stirred into a whole batch of porridge, baking or hot drinks.

What does Cinnamon Bark blend with?

Wild Orange and Clove for classic winter blends, and On Guard, which already contains cinnamon, for a spicy, cosy scent.
