On Guard smells like the inside of a gingerbread house: orange, clove and cinnamon, with a fresh herbal edge. It is dōTERRA’s best-known blend and the one many households keep in constant use from October to March, in the diffuser and in home-made cleaners.

In short: a protective blend of wild orange, clove, cinnamon bark, eucalyptus and rosemary with a warm, spicy, festive aroma. It costs $39 wholesale in the US and £38.75 in the UK, is used mostly in the diffuser in autumn and winter and in cleaning sprays, and is a “hot” oil that must always be strongly diluted on skin.

What it is and where it comes from

On Guard is a blend of five oils, each sourced separately: wild orange from cold-pressed peel, clove from the dried flower buds of the clove tree, cinnamon from the bark, and eucalyptus and rosemary from the leaves. The formula was designed to combine oils traditionally valued for keeping homes fresh and clean, and the name has since grown into a whole product family, from beadlets and throat drops to toothpaste, hand wash and a concentrated cleaner.

The key compounds are limonene from the orange, eugenol from the clove and cinnamaldehyde from the cinnamon bark. The last two are responsible for both the spicy smell and the warmth on skin.

Aroma

Sweet orange first, then clove and cinnamon, finishing with a fresh, slightly camphor-like note from eucalyptus and rosemary. It is cosy and familiar, close to mulled wine or Christmas baking, without being sugary.

How people use it

In the diffuser. On Guard is the autumn and winter staple. Three to four drops in a living room or entrance hall is the classic dose.

Blend Drops When
On Guard alone 4 Daytime, colder months
On Guard + Wild Orange 3 + 3 Christmas season, guests
On Guard + Frankincense 3 + 2 Winter evening
On Guard + Lemon 2 + 3 After cleaning the house

Around the house. This is On Guard’s second job. A spray of 500 ml water, a splash of vinegar, a few drops of dish soap and 15 drops of On Guard is a popular surface cleaner for kitchens, door handles and children’s tables (wipe surfaces children touch with plain water afterwards). A few drops in the mop bucket or on a cloth in the bin also work well.

On skin. Only heavily diluted, one drop per 10 ml of carrier oil. Many people use this blend on the soles of the feet in the evening during winter, where skin is thickest and least sensitive.

On the go. A dropper bottle of On Guard diluted in fractionated coconut oil, or a home-made hand spray with alcohol, is a common thing to keep in a handbag.

Safety

  • On Guard is a hot oil: never apply neat to skin, and dilute to about one drop per 10 ml of carrier.
  • Not neat on children, and skip topical use for young children altogether.
  • Keep away from eyes, the inside of the nose and mucous membranes; even the vapour from an open bottle can sting eyes.
  • Contains orange oil: avoid direct sun or UV on treated skin for 12 hours.
  • Clove oil can interact with blood-thinning medication; ask a doctor before regular topical use if you take any, and in pregnancy.
  • Can soften some plastics; use glass spray bottles where possible.

Is it worth the price?

A 15 ml bottle holds around 250 drops, so at $39 a drop costs about 16 cents and a diffuser session around 60 cents. A cleaning spray with 15 drops costs about $2.40 per bottle. Cinnamon bark and clove are both expensive and frequently adulterated oils, and a cheaper “thieves-style” blend often uses cassia or cinnamon leaf instead. dōTERRA publishes test results for every batch at sourcetoyou.com.

On Guard in the starter kits

On Guard is one of the ten oils in Home Essentials and Family Essentials. If you were going to buy On Guard, Lemon and Tea Tree for cleaning anyway, the kit adds the rest for little extra; see which dōTERRA kit to choose. It is also our suggested alternative fifth oil in the first five oils for your home. For a lighter citrus, try Wild Orange; for cleaning blends, Tea Tree.

Where to buy it

Buy On Guard from the official dōTERRA warehouse in your country at the price shown above. It is a popular counterfeit target, and fake blends with cheap cinnamon leaf can be harsher on skin; see how to spot a fake. Pick your country on the home page, or ask us for help.

Questions and answers

How much does dōTERRA On Guard cost?

In the US a 15 ml bottle of On Guard is $39.00 wholesale and $52.00 retail; in the UK £38.75 / £51.66. The table above lists ten countries from the official October 2026 price lists.

What is in On Guard?

Wild orange peel, clove bud, cinnamon bark, eucalyptus leaf and rosemary leaf. The clove and cinnamon give it the warm, spicy character and also make it one of the hotter blends on the skin.

Can I put On Guard on my skin?

Only well diluted: one drop per 10 ml of carrier oil for adults, and many people prefer the soles of the feet, where skin is thicker. Never apply it neat, never near eyes or mucous membranes, and avoid sun on treated skin because of the orange oil.

Is On Guard safe around children?

Diffused in a well-ventilated room, in small amounts, most families use it without problems. Do not apply it neat to children, and for young children skip topical use altogether or ask a doctor.

Is On Guard included in a starter kit?

Yes. On Guard is one of the ten oils in Home Essentials (15 ml bottles plus a diffuser) and Family Essentials (5 ml bottles).
