Deep Blue is the blend athletes, gardeners and people who sit at a desk all day talk about most. It is a massage oil first and foremost: cool on contact, then gently warming, with a smell somewhere between a sports changing room and a flower shop.

In short: a soothing blend of wintergreen, camphor, peppermint, ylang ylang, helichrysum, blue tansy, blue chamomile and osmanthus, sold in a 5 ml bottle. It costs $38 wholesale in the US and £37.75 in the UK, is used diluted for massage after sport, gardening or long hours at a computer, and has firm safety limits: not for children, external use only, and not with blood thinners.

What it is and where it comes from

Deep Blue is built around wintergreen and camphor, the two oils that give it the classic “muscle rub” character. Peppermint adds the cooling sensation. The rest of the formula is less obvious and much more expensive: helichrysum from the Balkans, blue tansy from Morocco, blue chamomile, ylang ylang and osmanthus flowers. Blue tansy and blue chamomile contain chamazulene, which gives the oil its deep blue colour, hence the name.

The key compound is methyl salicylate from wintergreen, chemically related to aspirin, together with camphor and menthol.

Aroma

Medicinal and cooling up front, wintergreen and camphor, softened by sweet floral notes from ylang ylang and osmanthus and a faint herbal, honeyed base. It is pleasant for a massage blend but not something you diffuse.

How people use it

Deep Blue is a topical blend. It is not designed for the diffuser.

After exercise. Two to three drops in a teaspoon of carrier oil, massaged into calves, thighs, shoulders or back after a run, a gym session or a long hike. The cool-then-warm feeling is what most users love.

After desk work. One or two drops in a little carrier oil, massaged into the neck and shoulders at the end of the day.

For hands and knees after gardening or DIY. A small diluted amount rubbed into the area; wash your hands well afterwards.

Typical dilutions:

Area Deep Blue Carrier oil
Neck and shoulders 1–2 drops 1 teaspoon (5 ml)
Lower back 2–3 drops 1 teaspoon (5 ml)
Both calves after a run 3–4 drops 2 teaspoons (10 ml)
Feet after a long walk 2 drops 1 teaspoon (5 ml)

With the rub. Many people keep the Deep Blue Rub in the gym bag and the oil at home for mixing larger amounts or boosting the rub with an extra drop.

Safety

  • Not for children. Wintergreen’s methyl salicylate is dangerous if swallowed, even in small amounts. Store well out of reach.
  • Do not use if you take blood-thinning medication, if you are allergic to aspirin or salicylates, or during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
  • External use only. Never on broken, irritated or freshly shaved skin, and never near eyes or mucous membranes.
  • Always dilute: one to three drops per 5 ml of carrier for adults.
  • Do not combine with heat pads or hot baths straight after application, and do not use under tight bandages.
  • Wash hands after use; a smear of Deep Blue in an eye is very unpleasant.

Is it worth the price?

Deep Blue looks expensive per drop: $38 for about 85 drops is roughly 45 cents a drop, the highest of any everyday oil. But each massage uses two or three drops mixed into carrier oil, so a treatment costs around $1 to $1.30, comparable to a good branded sports rub. Helichrysum, blue tansy and blue chamomile are among the costliest oils in the world, which is why genuine versions of this blend cannot be cheap. Lot test results are at sourcetoyou.com.

Deep Blue in the starter kits

Deep Blue is one of the ten oils in Home Essentials and Family Essentials. Because it is the most expensive per millilitre of the ten, the kits are an economical way to try it; see which dōTERRA kit to choose. For a much milder massage oil, consider Copaiba; for a simple cooling rub for adults, a diluted Peppermint.

Questions and answers

How much does dōTERRA Deep Blue cost?

In the US a 5 ml bottle of Deep Blue is $38.00 wholesale and $50.67 retail; in the UK £37.75 / £50.34. Note the smaller bottle: 5 ml instead of 15 ml. The table above lists ten countries from the official October 2026 price lists.

Why is Deep Blue sold in a 5 ml bottle?

Several of its ingredients, notably blue tansy, blue chamomile, helichrysum and osmanthus, are very expensive. A 5 ml bottle (about 85 drops) keeps the price manageable, and because the blend is always diluted, a little goes a long way.

Can children use Deep Blue?

No. Deep Blue contains wintergreen, which is rich in methyl salicylate, a compound related to aspirin. It is not suitable for children, and the bottle should be kept well out of their reach.

What is the difference between Deep Blue oil and Deep Blue Rub?

The oil is the concentrated blend that you dilute yourself. Deep Blue Rub is a ready-to-use cream containing the blend, and there are also a Roll-On and a Stick. The rub is the easiest option for everyday use; the oil is more economical if you mix your own.

Is Deep Blue included in a starter kit?

Yes. Deep Blue is one of the ten oils in Home Essentials and Family Essentials.
