Peppermint is the oil people reach for when they need to wake up. One sniff from the bottle, a drop on the back of the neck or two drops in the diffuser in the middle of the afternoon: it is fast, unmistakable and a little bit of a shock to the system.
In short: Mentha piperita, steam-distilled from the leaves of peppermint grown in the US Pacific Northwest, with an intense, cooling minty aroma. It costs $26 wholesale in the US and £26.26 in the UK, works for focus, after exercise and for clearing bad smells, and needs more care with children and dilution than Lavender or Lemon.
What it is and where it comes from
Peppermint is a natural hybrid of watermint and spearmint. dōTERRA’s oil comes mainly from farms in Washington, Oregon and Idaho, where long summer days and cool nights produce leaves with a high and well-balanced menthol content. The plants are cut just before flowering, partly dried in the field and steam-distilled.
The two key compounds are menthol, which creates the cooling sensation, and menthone, which adds a sharper, slightly fruity edge. The balance between them is what separates a good peppermint from a harsh one; cheap oils are sometimes topped up with synthetic menthol.
Aroma
Bright, sweet, piercing mint, cleaner and stronger than chewing gum or toothpaste. It fills a room in seconds and dominates any blend, so it is usually used in small amounts alongside citrus or Lavender.
How people use it
In the diffuser. Peppermint is a daytime oil. Two or three drops go a long way.
| Blend | Drops | When |
|---|---|---|
| Peppermint + Wild Orange | 2 + 3 | Mid-afternoon slump |
| Peppermint + Rosemary | 2 + 2 | Study session or exam prep |
| Peppermint + Lemon | 2 + 3 | Morning, home office |
| Peppermint + Eucalyptus | 1 + 3 | Summer evening, stuffy room |
On skin. Diluted (one to three drops per 10 ml of carrier oil), Peppermint is massaged into the temples, the back of the neck or the shoulders after a long day at a desk, and into calves and feet after running or a long walk. On a hot day, a diluted drop on the back of the neck feels like stepping into shade. Wash your hands afterwards before touching your eyes.
Around the house. A few drops on cotton balls in a bin cupboard, a car or a gym bag mask stale smells. Peppermint added to a water spray is also popular around doorways and windows in summer; many people find insects avoid the smell.
When travelling. A sniff from the open bottle or a drop on a tissue is a common habit on long car journeys and early flights.
Safety
- Do not apply to the face or near the nose of children under six, and keep it well diluted and away from the face for older children.
- Always dilute for topical use; neat peppermint can feel burning, especially on thin or warm skin. One to three drops per 10 ml is a good range.
- Keep away from eyes and mucous membranes. If it gets into an eye, flush with a carrier oil, not water.
- Do not use before a bath or sauna on large areas of skin; the cold sensation becomes intense with heat.
- Use in pregnancy, while breastfeeding or with heart conditions only after asking a doctor.
- Follow your country’s label: in the US Peppermint is labelled as a dietary supplement; UK and European labels cover aromatic and topical use.
Is it worth the price?
A 15 ml bottle holds around 250 drops, so at $26 a drop costs about 10 cents, and a diffuser session around 20–30 cents. Because so little is needed each time, one bottle typically lasts months. Peppermint is a frequent target for adulteration with synthetic menthol or cheaper cornmint, which is why the batch reports at sourcetoyou.com are worth a look: the lot number is on the bottom of the bottle.
Peppermint in the starter kits
Peppermint is part of Home Essentials and Family Essentials, alongside Lavender, Lemon and seven others. If you would use at least six of those ten, a kit costs less than buying them separately; which dōTERRA kit to choose compares them. Peppermint also appears among the first five oils for your home. For a gentler minty-fresh oil, look at Breathe / dōTERRA Air; for after-sport massage, Deep Blue is the specialist.
Where to buy it
Buy from the official warehouse in your country at the price shown in the table above. A marketplace peppermint at half price may simply be cornmint with added menthol; here is how to spot a fake. Pick your country on the home page to go to the official wholesale form, or ask us if anything is unclear.
Questions and answers
How much does dōTERRA Peppermint cost?
In the US a 15 ml bottle is $26.00 wholesale and $34.67 retail; in the UK £26.26 / £35.00. The table above shows ten countries from the official October 2026 price lists.
Why does Peppermint feel so cold on my skin?
Menthol triggers the cold receptors in the skin, so it feels icy without changing skin temperature. Neat, that sensation can be uncomfortable or even burning, which is why diluting it, one to three drops per 10 ml of carrier oil, is the better habit.
Can I use Peppermint around children?
Not on or near the face of children under six, because menthol close to the nose can affect breathing in small children. For older children use it well diluted and away from the face; a drop in a diffuser in a large room is the gentlest option.
How many drops of Peppermint should I put in a diffuser?
Two to three drops are enough for a normal room. It is one of the strongest-smelling oils, and more than four drops quickly becomes overwhelming, especially in a small space.
Is Peppermint included in a starter kit?
Yes. Peppermint is one of the ten oils in Home Essentials (15 ml bottles plus a diffuser) and Family Essentials (5 ml bottles).
