DigestZen is the blend that lives in the kitchen drawer and the travel bag. Nobody buys it for its perfume; people keep it for the evening after a heavy dinner, for long car journeys and for the moments when the stomach feels anything but zen.

In short: a digestive blend sold as DigestZen in the US and ZenGest in Europe, the UK and the UAE, made of ginger, peppermint, caraway, coriander, anise, tarragon and fennel. It costs $38 wholesale in the US and £36.76 in the UK, is used mainly for a diluted tummy massage after meals and aromatically when travelling, and needs dilution and care in pregnancy.

What it is and where it comes from

The blend draws on herbs and spices that cooks and grandmothers around the world have long associated with good digestion: ginger root, peppermint leaf, caraway seed, coriander seed, anise seed, tarragon and fennel seed. Each oil is sourced separately, from ginger grown in Southeast Asia to peppermint from the American Pacific Northwest, and then blended.

The name changed in Europe for regulatory reasons; the product itself is the same concept. Key aromatic compounds include anethole (anise, fennel, tarragon), menthol (peppermint) and zingiberene (ginger).

Aroma

Sweet and spicy, with liquorice from anise and fennel, a warm ginger base and a minty lift. It is a little like a herbal digestif or a box of mixed spices. Not everyone loves it, but it is distinctive and reassuring to those who use it often.

How people use it

On the tummy. The classic use: two to three drops in a teaspoon of carrier oil, massaged slowly in a clockwise direction around the navel after a heavy meal or before bed. This is a traditional self-massage routine; the warmth of the hands and the spicy scent are part of the ritual.

When travelling. A sniff from the open bottle or a drop on a tissue during a winding car or boat journey is a habit many families swear by. Some keep a diluted roller in the glovebox.

In the diffuser. Not the main use, but the spicy-sweet aroma works in the kitchen or dining room:

Blend Drops When
DigestZen + Wild Orange 2 + 3 After a big family dinner
DigestZen + Peppermint 2 + 1 Long car journey (portable diffuser)
DigestZen + Lemon 2 + 3 Kitchen after cooking with garlic or onions

In the US. DigestZen carries a dietary supplement label in the US and is also sold as softgels and chewable tablets. Outside the US, follow your local label, which is written for aromatic and topical use.

Safety

  • Dilute for topical use: two to three drops per teaspoon (5 ml) of carrier is about 2–3%, appropriate for adults.
  • For children, use one drop per 10 ml of carrier at most, and not for young children without a doctor’s advice. Keep peppermint-containing blends away from the faces of children under six.
  • Anise and fennel contain anethole: ask a doctor before using in pregnancy or while breastfeeding.
  • Keep away from eyes and mucous membranes.
  • Do not rely on an oil for persistent or severe stomach pain; see a doctor.
  • Read your bottle’s label: US, UK, EU and UAE versions are labelled differently.

Is it worth the price?

At $38 for around 250 drops, DigestZen costs about 15 cents a drop, and a tummy massage with three drops about 45 cents. Building a similar blend would require seven single oils, several of which (tarragon, anise, caraway) most people would never use alone, so for this particular purpose the ready-made blend is good value. As with all dōTERRA oils, batch test results are available at sourcetoyou.com.

DigestZen in the starter kits

DigestZen (ZenGest) is part of Home Essentials and Family Essentials. It is one of the reasons the kits are popular with families: alongside Peppermint and Lemon it covers the everyday tummy and travel situations. Compare the options in which dōTERRA kit to choose or read the Home Essentials review. If you want something simpler, Peppermint alone covers the travel use.

It is the same digestive blend under two names: DigestZen in the US, ZenGest in Europe, the UK and the UAE. Labels and permitted uses follow local rules, so read the one on your bottle.
