Serenity is the evening blend. Where Lavender is clean and herbal, Serenity is soft, sweet and a little powdery, closer to a quiet, expensive perfume than to a herb. It is the oil many parents diffuse during the bedtime routine and many adults use in their own wind-down hour.
In short: a restful blend of lavender, cedarwood, ho wood, ylang ylang, marjoram, Roman chamomile, vetiver, vanilla bean absolute and Hawaiian sandalwood. It costs $42 wholesale in the US and £41.75 in the UK, is used in the bedroom diffuser, on the pillow and in the bath, and is suitable for aromatic and diluted topical use.
What it is and where it comes from
Serenity starts with lavender and builds a warm, woody, slightly sweet base around it. Cedarwood and ho wood give softness and depth; ylang ylang adds a rich floral note; marjoram and Roman chamomile bring a herbal, apple-like gentleness; vetiver contributes an earthy, smoky base; vanilla bean absolute and Hawaiian sandalwood make the finish creamy and long-lasting. Several of these, especially vanilla absolute and sandalwood, are among the most expensive ingredients dōTERRA uses, which explains why Serenity costs more than many single oils.
The main aromatic compounds include linalool and linalyl acetate (from lavender and ho wood) and cedrol (from cedarwood).
Aroma
Soft, sweet and powdery: lavender at the front, then a creamy vanilla and wood base with a gentle floral touch from ylang ylang. It is warm and enveloping rather than fresh. Most people either fall in love with it on the first sniff or find it too sweet, so if you can, smell it before buying a full bottle.
How people use it
In the bedroom diffuser. Three to four drops, thirty minutes before bed.
| Blend | Drops | When |
|---|---|---|
| Serenity alone | 4 | Bedtime routine |
| Serenity + Lavender | 2 + 2 | A lighter, fresher evening blend |
| Serenity + Bergamot | 3 + 2 | Reading in the evening |
| Serenity + Balance | 3 + 2 | After a stressful day |
On the pillow. One drop on a cotton pad tucked inside the pillowcase, or a pillow spray of 50 ml water, a teaspoon of alcohol and 10 drops of Serenity. Avoid putting neat oil directly on fabric, as some ingredients can leave a mark.
On skin. Diluted, two to three drops per 10 ml of carrier oil, on the wrists, the back of the neck or the soles of the feet, as part of a calm evening routine. A roller bottle by the bed is the easiest way.
In the bath. Five drops mixed into a tablespoon of carrier oil, honey or bath salts, then added to warm (not hot) water.
As a perfume. Because of its rich base, Serenity also works as a soft personal fragrance: diluted in a roller with a carrier oil and applied to pulse points.
Safety
Serenity is a gentle blend, but:
- Dilute for skin use, especially on children: one drop per 10 ml of carrier for young children, and ask a doctor first for babies.
- Ylang ylang can sensitise skin in some people; patch-test first on the inner arm.
- Do not diffuse all night in a small, closed bedroom; 30–60 minutes is plenty.
- Keep away from eyes.
- Use in pregnancy or with medical conditions only after asking a doctor.
Is it worth the price?
At $42 for about 250 drops, Serenity costs around 17 cents a drop, or roughly 70 cents per evening in the diffuser. Making a comparable blend yourself would require nine single oils, including vanilla absolute and sandalwood, which cost far more than this whole bottle. For a nightly routine it is good value; for occasional use, Lavender alone may be enough. Lot test results are at sourcetoyou.com.
What to pair it with
Serenity is not in Home Essentials or Family Essentials; the kits contain Lavender, which is the simplest relaxing alternative. If you love evening routines, Serenity pairs well with Balance and Bergamot, and Clary Sage can deepen it for adults. Before buying, it helps to read which dōTERRA kit to choose, so you can add Serenity to a kit order.

Questions and answers
How much does dōTERRA Serenity cost?
In the US a 15 ml bottle of Serenity is $42.00 wholesale and $56.00 retail; in the UK £41.75 / £55.67. The table above lists ten countries from the official October 2026 price lists.
What is the difference between Serenity and Lavender?
Lavender is a single oil with a fresh floral-herbal scent. Serenity contains lavender but adds cedarwood, ho wood, ylang ylang, marjoram, Roman chamomile, vetiver, vanilla and Hawaiian sandalwood, making it softer, sweeter and more powdery, more like a bedtime perfume.
How do I use Serenity at bedtime?
Diffuse three to four drops in the bedroom half an hour before sleep, or put one drop on a cotton pad tucked into the pillowcase. Some people also apply it diluted to the wrists or the soles of the feet.
Can I use Serenity in the bath?
Yes, but mix five drops into a spoon of carrier oil, honey or bath salts first. Essential oils do not dissolve in water and would otherwise float on the surface undiluted.
Is Serenity in a starter kit?
No. Serenity is not one of the ten oils in Home Essentials or Family Essentials, so it is bought separately; Lavender, which is in both kits, is the closest substitute.
