Bergamot is the elegant citrus. It is fresh like lemon but rounder and more floral, with the unmistakable scent of Earl Grey tea. It is many perfumers’ favourite top note and many users’ favourite evening oil, and it comes with one rule that must not be ignored: no sun on treated skin.
In short: Citrus bergamia, cold-pressed from the peel of bergamot oranges grown in Calabria, Italy, with a fresh, citrus-floral aroma. It costs $43 wholesale in the US and £42.25 in the UK, is used in evening diffuser blends, as a natural perfume and with lavender for relaxation, and is strongly photosensitive.
What it is and where it comes from
The bergamot orange is a small, green-to-yellow citrus fruit, too sour to eat, grown almost exclusively on a narrow strip of coast in Calabria, at the toe of Italy. The peculiar microclimate there produces the finest bergamot oil, and Calabria accounts for the vast majority of world production. The oil is cold-pressed from the rind.
Its main compounds are limonene, linalyl acetate and linalool. The last two are also found in lavender and clary sage, which is why bergamot feels so calm compared with other citrus oils. Bergamot also contains bergapten, a furocoumarin that makes skin highly sensitive to UV light.
Bergamot is the flavour of Earl Grey tea and one of the oldest ingredients of eau de Cologne.
Aroma
Fresh and citrusy at first, then softly floral and slightly spicy. It is less sweet than orange, less sharp than lemon, and lingers longer than both. It instantly feels refined, which is why it appears in so many classic fragrances.
How people use it
In the evening diffuser. Bergamot is the citrus for the end of the day.
| Blend | Drops | When |
|---|---|---|
| Bergamot + Lavender | 3 + 3 | Relaxing evening |
| Bergamot + Frankincense | 3 + 2 | Reading or journaling |
| Bergamot + Ylang Ylang | 3 + 1 | Romantic evening |
| Bergamot + Balance | 2 + 3 | After a stressful day |
| Bergamot + Clary Sage | 3 + 2 | Bath time |
As a natural perfume. A roller with 10 ml of jojoba, three drops bergamot, one drop ylang ylang and one drop frankincense makes an easy, elegant scent. Apply only to skin that will stay covered or in the evening.
With Lavender for relaxation. Bergamot and Lavender share key aromatic compounds and are a classic pairing: in the diffuser, in a pillow spray, or in a bath with carrier oil.
Around the house. A few drops on a cotton pad in a drawer, on a wooden diffuser in the hall, or in a linen spray. Bergamot is too precious for cleaning; use Lemon for that.
In a tea moment. A drop of bergamot on a tissue next to a cup of plain black tea recreates the Earl Grey experience aromatically.
Safety
- Strongly photosensitive: after applying to skin, avoid direct sun and UV, including tanning beds, for 12 hours. This applies even to diluted use. Burns and dark patches can appear hours later and persist for months.
- Dilute for skin use: two to three drops per 10 ml of carrier.
- Prefer evening application, or skin that will stay covered.
- Citrus oils oxidise; keep the cap tight and use within about a year.
- Keep away from eyes.
- Use in pregnancy or on children only diffused, or after asking a doctor.
Is it worth the price?
At $43 for around 250 drops, Bergamot costs about 17 cents a drop, much more than Lemon or Wild Orange. The reason is the source: bergamot grows in one small region, and the yield of oil from the peel is low. In return you get a citrus with real depth that works in perfumes and evening blends where cheaper citrus oils fall flat. Bergamot is also one of the most adulterated citrus oils, often reconstructed from cheaper components; dōTERRA’s lot reports are at sourcetoyou.com.
What to pair it with
Bergamot is not in Home Essentials or Family Essentials, but it complements the kit’s Lavender and Frankincense beautifully. For perfume blends, add Ylang Ylang; for a softer evening, Serenity or Balance. If you want a cheaper everyday citrus, choose Wild Orange or Lemon.
Where to buy it
Buy Bergamot from the official dōTERRA warehouse in your own country at the price shown above. Cheap “bergamot” on marketplaces is often reconstructed or diluted; see how to spot a fake. Pick your country on the home page, or ask us.
Questions and answers
How much does dōTERRA Bergamot cost?
In the US a 15 ml bottle is $43.00 wholesale and $57.33 retail; in the UK £42.25 / £56.34. The table above lists ten countries from the official October 2026 price lists.
Why is Bergamot dangerous in the sun?
Cold-pressed bergamot contains bergapten, one of the strongest photosensitising compounds among essential oils. On skin exposed to sunlight or UV within 12 hours it can cause burns and long-lasting dark patches, so keep treated skin covered or apply it only in the evening.
Does dōTERRA Bergamot smell like Earl Grey tea?
Yes. Earl Grey is black tea flavoured with bergamot, so the oil is the very scent people know from the tea, only fresher and more floral.
Can I use Bergamot as a perfume?
Yes, it is a classic perfume ingredient. Dilute it in a carrier oil (two to three drops per 10 ml) and apply only to skin that will stay out of the sun, such as behind the ears or on covered areas, or use it in the evening.
Is Bergamot in a starter kit?
No. Bergamot is not one of the ten oils in Home Essentials or Family Essentials, so it is bought separately.
