Eucalyptus is the smell of a spa steam room and a cold winter morning. It is not a subtle oil, but it is one of the most immediately useful: in the shower, in the sauna, in the diffuser when the windows have been closed for weeks, and in cleaning sprays.

In short: a blend of several eucalyptus species (E. globulus, radiata, polybractea, kochii, loxophleba), steam-distilled from the leaves, rich in 1,8-cineole, with a fresh, clean, camphor-like aroma. It costs $23 wholesale in the US and £20.26 in the UK, is used for shower steam, sauna, winter diffusing and cleaning, and should be kept away from the faces of young children.

What it is and where it comes from

There are hundreds of eucalyptus species, nearly all native to Australia. Most commercial eucalyptus oil is Eucalyptus globulus, often from China or Portugal. dōTERRA instead blends several species: globulus for the classic medicinal note, radiata for a softer, sweeter character, and the Australian mallee species polybractea, kochii and loxophleba, which are especially high in 1,8-cineole. The leaves are steam-distilled.

The main compound, 1,8-cineole (also called eucalyptol), is responsible for the cool, opening sensation of the aroma.

Aroma

Fresh, sharp and camphor-clean, with green and slightly sweet undertones from the radiata. It is less harsh than many supermarket eucalyptus oils and noticeably more rounded than a single-species globulus.

How people use it

In the shower. The best-known trick: two or three drops on the shower floor, away from the jet. The steam fills the cubicle with eucalyptus vapour, a home version of a spa steam room.

In the sauna. One or two drops in the ladle of water for the stones (never directly onto hot stones), or a few drops in a bowl of water in the cabin. Follow the sauna’s own rules if it is not your own.

In the diffuser. Mostly in winter.

Blend Drops When
Eucalyptus + Lemon 2 + 3 Daytime, closed windows
Eucalyptus + Peppermint 3 + 1 Stuffy office or summer heat
Eucalyptus + Lavender 2 + 3 Bedroom in the evening
Eucalyptus + Rosemary 2 + 2 Fresh herbal morning blend

Around the house. Eucalyptus is a good grease and sticker remover and pairs with Lemon in an all-purpose spray. A few drops on a cloth for wiping down gym equipment or a yoga mat, or in the washing machine drawer with towels, is also common.

On skin. Diluted, three to five drops in a tablespoon of carrier oil, as a chest and back rub for adults in winter, or in a foot bath after a long day.

Safety

  • Do not apply near the face or nose of young children, and do not diffuse it right next to a baby’s cot.
  • Dilute for topical use: about 2–3% for adults (three to five drops per tablespoon of carrier).
  • Keep away from eyes; the vapour alone can make them water.
  • Not for internal use. Eucalyptus oil is toxic if swallowed, especially for children; keep the bottle out of reach.
  • People with asthma should test carefully and stop if the aroma feels uncomfortable.
  • Avoid in pregnancy and with epilepsy unless a doctor agrees.
  • Keep away from pets, especially cats.

Is it worth the price?

At $23 for around 250 drops, Eucalyptus costs about 9 cents a drop; a shower session with three drops is under 30 cents. Supermarket eucalyptus is cheaper still, but it is usually a single industrial species, sometimes rectified or blended with synthetic eucalyptol. dōTERRA’s multi-species oil is tested batch by batch, with results at sourcetoyou.com.

What to pair it with

Eucalyptus is not in Home Essentials or Family Essentials. If you have a kit, Breathe / dōTERRA Air already contains eucalyptus, so you may not need the single oil at first. If you love the shower-steam effect, though, Eucalyptus on its own is cheaper per use and stronger. It pairs well with Lemon, Peppermint and Rosemary. See also the first five oils for your home.

Where to buy it

Questions and answers

How much does dōTERRA Eucalyptus cost?

In the US a 15 ml bottle is $23.00 wholesale and $30.67 retail; in the UK £20.26 / £27.01. The table above lists ten countries from the official October 2026 price lists.

Which eucalyptus species does dōTERRA use?

dōTERRA Eucalyptus blends several species, including Eucalyptus globulus, radiata, polybractea, kochii and loxophleba. Combining them gives a rounder, softer aroma than single-species globulus oil.

How do I use Eucalyptus in the shower?

Put two or three drops on the shower floor or wall, away from the direct water stream, and let the steam carry the scent. Be careful: oil on the floor can make it slippery for a moment.

Is Eucalyptus safe for young children?

Do not apply it near the face or nose of young children, because 1,8-cineole close to the airways can be a problem for them. A small amount in a diffuser in a large ventilated room is the more cautious option.

Is Eucalyptus included in a starter kit?

No, Eucalyptus is not one of the ten oils in Home Essentials or Family Essentials, so it is bought separately. The kit oil Breathe (dōTERRA Air) contains eucalyptus as one of its ingredients.
