Geranium is the oil that turns a plain routine into something that feels a little more cared for. A single drop is enough to scent a jar of face cream or a small bottle of hair oil, and its rosy note makes it one of the most popular floral oils for people who find rose itself too expensive.
In short: rose geranium (Pelargonium graveolens), steam-distilled from the leaves and stems, with a rosy-green aroma. It costs $50 wholesale in the US and £50.26 in the UK, so it is one of the pricier single oils, but you use it a drop at a time: in skin care, on the ends of the hair, in natural perfume and in floral diffuser blends.
What it is and where it comes from
Pelargonium graveolens is a scented-leaf pelargonium native to southern Africa. Its oil does not come from the flowers but from the leaves and green stems, which are harvested and steam-distilled. It is grown commercially in several countries; read the label of your bottle for the current origin.
The main aromatic compounds are citronellol and geraniol, both also found in rose oil. That shared chemistry is why geranium smells so much like rose and blends so naturally with other florals.
Aroma
Sweet and floral at the top, with a green, leafy, faintly minty edge that keeps it from being cloying. It is brighter and less honeyed than rose, and noticeably stronger than you might expect: start with one drop.
How people use it
In skin care. This is geranium’s main job. Add one drop to a single application of an unscented face or body cream, or one to two drops to 10 ml of jojoba or another carrier for a simple facial oil. Many people also keep a small bottle of diluted geranium for cuticles and dry hands.
On hair. One drop mixed into a few drops of argan or jojoba oil, smoothed over the ends of the hair, adds shine and a light scent.
In the diffuser.
| Blend | Drops | When |
|---|---|---|
| Geranium + Lavender | 2 + 3 | Evening, bedroom |
| Geranium + Clary Sage | 2 + 2 | Quiet afternoon |
| Geranium + Bergamot | 2 + 2 | Relaxed evening |
| Geranium + Grapefruit | 1 + 3 | Fresh, light morning |
As a natural perfume. Mix five drops of geranium, three of bergamot and two of cedarwood in 10 ml of jojoba in a roller bottle. Let it rest for a few days so the notes settle.
Safety
Geranium is generally gentle, but treat it with respect:
- Dilute for skin use: one to two drops per 10 ml of carrier; on the face, the lower end.
- Patch-test before using it on the face: one diluted drop on the inner arm, wait 24 hours.
- Geraniol and citronellol are listed fragrance allergens; if you react to perfumes, be careful.
- Keep away from eyes.
- For children, diffuse only at low dose; for pregnancy or medical conditions, ask a doctor first.
- Follow the label of your bottle and your country.
Is it worth the price?
A 15 ml bottle holds about 250 drops, so $50 works out at roughly 20 cents a drop. Because skin care needs only one drop at a time, a daily routine costs about 20 cents, less than many scented creams add to their price. Geranium is also a frequently adulterated oil: cheap bottles are often stretched with synthetic citronellol or geraniol. dōTERRA publishes the test results for each lot at sourcetoyou.com.
If you plan to reorder regularly, the Loyalty Rewards Program can take some of the sting out of a pricier bottle.
What to pair it with
Geranium is not in Home Essentials or Family Essentials. It pairs best with the kit’s Lavender and with Clary Sage for a soft floral blend. For perfume, add Bergamot, Ylang Ylang or a woody base such as Cedarwood or Patchouli. For a skin-care shelf, Frankincense and Roman Chamomile are the usual companions, plus a good carrier oil.
Where to buy it
Buy directly from dōTERRA under your market’s terms at the price in the table above. The parcel ships from the regional warehouse under your country’s rules. If your country is not an official dōTERRA market, you order through Global Access: the parcel ships from the US via a forwarding intermediary, with extra shipping and customs costs. A $10 “geranium” on a marketplace is almost certainly not the same oil; here is how to spot a fake. Questions and answers
How much does dōTERRA Geranium cost?
In the US a 15 ml bottle is $50.00 wholesale and $66.67 retail; in the UK £50.26 / £67.01. The table above lists ten countries from the official October 2026 price lists.
What does Geranium smell like?
Rosy and green at the same time: a sweet floral note close to rose, with a fresh, slightly minty leafiness underneath. Many people use it as an affordable stand-in for rose in home-made perfume.
How do I add Geranium to my skin care?
Add one drop to a single portion of your usual unscented cream or to 10 ml of a carrier oil such as jojoba. Patch-test first, and do not use it neat on the face.
Is it the same plant as the geranium on my windowsill?
Not quite. Garden “geraniums” are mostly zonal pelargoniums with little scent. The oil comes from Pelargonium graveolens, a scented-leaf pelargonium whose leaves smell of rose when rubbed.
How long does a bottle of Geranium last?
A 15 ml bottle holds about 250 drops. Used one drop a day in skin care and a few drops a week in perfume or the diffuser, it easily lasts six months or more.
