Roman Chamomile is the softest-smelling oil in the range. Its scent is sweet, fruity and herbal, a little like a fresh apple in a meadow, and people reach for it at the end of the day, in gentle skin care and in rooms where the scent should stay light.
In short: Roman chamomile (Anthemis nobilis, also called Chamaemelum nobile), steam-distilled from the flowers, with a sweet, apple-herbal aroma. A 5 ml bottle costs $52 wholesale in the US and £51.76 in the UK, so it is one of the most expensive oils per drop. It is used in the bedtime diffuser, in gentle skin care and, at low dose, in children’s rooms. Take care if you have a daisy-family allergy.
What it is and where it comes from
Roman chamomile is a low, creeping perennial with small white daisy flowers. It has been grown in European gardens for centuries, and it is the plant used for traditional chamomile lawns. The flowers are harvested and steam-distilled; it takes a large amount of flowers to produce a small amount of oil. Read the label of your bottle for the current origin.
Unlike most oils, Roman chamomile is dominated by esters, especially isobutyl angelate and related compounds. Esters are often fruity and soft-smelling, which explains the apple-like note and the oil’s gentle character.
Aroma
Sweet, fruity and herbal, with an apple or pear note and a warm, hay-like background. It is subtle and not as sugary as many floral oils. Many people find it quietly calming in the evening.
How people use it
In the diffuser. Roman chamomile works at very low drop counts:
| Blend | Drops | When |
|---|---|---|
| Roman Chamomile + Lavender | 1 + 3 | Before bed |
| Roman Chamomile + Wild Orange | 1 + 3 | Quiet afternoon |
| Roman Chamomile + Cedarwood | 1 + 2 | Reading in the evening |
| Roman Chamomile (child’s room) | 1 | Short session before sleep |
In skin care. One drop added to a single portion of an unscented cream, or one drop per 10 ml of a carrier oil, for a gentle facial or body oil. It sits well alongside lavender and frankincense in an evening routine.
In the bath. Two drops mixed into a spoon of carrier oil, honey or bath salt before adding to the water.
For children. Many families use it diffused at a low dose in children’s rooms, often with a drop of lavender. For skin use with older children, dilute to one drop in 20 ml of carrier oil. For babies, ask a doctor first.
Safety
- Allergies: chamomile is in the daisy family (Asteraceae). If you are allergic to ragweed, daisies, chrysanthemums or marigolds, patch-test first or avoid it.
- Dilute for skin use: one drop per 10 ml of carrier for adults, one drop per 20 ml for older children.
- Patch-test: one diluted drop on the inner arm, wait 24 hours.
- Diffuse at low dose in children’s rooms, with the door open, for 15–30 minutes rather than all night.
- Pregnancy, infants or medical conditions: ask a doctor before use.
- Keep away from eyes. Follow the label of your country.
Is it worth the price?
Roman Chamomile comes in a 5 ml bottle with about 85 drops, so $52 works out at roughly 61 cents a drop. That is expensive, and the honest answer is that it is worth it mainly if you love the scent or want a very gentle oil for skin care and children’s rooms. Because it works at one drop, an evening blend still costs well under a dollar. Chamomile oils are also frequently adulterated or confused with cheaper “Moroccan chamomile” (a different plant). dōTERRA publishes the test results for each lot at sourcetoyou.com.

What to pair it with
Roman Chamomile is not in Home Essentials or Family Essentials. Its closest companion is the kit’s Lavender; together they are a classic bedtime pair. Cedarwood and Wild Orange are cheaper oils that stretch it in a blend. For skin care, combine it with Frankincense or Geranium. If you like the idea of a ready-made calming blend, look at Serenity or Adaptiv.

Questions and answers
How much does dōTERRA Roman Chamomile cost?
In the US a 5 ml bottle is $52.00 wholesale and $69.33 retail; in the UK £51.76 / £69.01. With about 85 drops per bottle, it is one of the most expensive oils per drop. The table above lists ten countries from the official October 2026 price lists.
What is the difference between Roman and German chamomile?
They are different plants. Roman chamomile (Anthemis nobilis) gives a pale oil with a sweet, apple-like scent. German chamomile (Matricaria recutita) gives a deep blue oil with a heavier, herbaceous smell. dōTERRA's single oil is Roman chamomile.
Can I diffuse Roman Chamomile in a child's room?
Many parents do, at a low dose: one drop, or one drop with one of lavender, in a well-ventilated room for a short time before bed. For babies and very young children, ask your doctor first.
Is Roman Chamomile safe if I have hay fever?
Be careful. Chamomile belongs to the daisy family, and people allergic to ragweed, daisies, chrysanthemums or marigolds may react to it. Patch-test, and skip it if you have a known allergy.
How long does a 5 ml bottle last?
About 85 drops. Used one or two drops at bedtime a few nights a week, it lasts around two months; because it is pricey, most people blend it rather than use it alone.
