Patchouli has a reputation that runs ahead of it. Mention it and many people picture incense sticks and 1970s festivals. Smell a good, well-aged patchouli in a balanced blend, though, and it turns out to be one of the richest base notes in perfumery, warm and earthy with a sweet, almost cocoa-like depth.

In short: patchouli (Pogostemon cablin) is steam-distilled from the dried leaves of a bushy herb in the mint family. It costs $33 wholesale in the US and £32.75 in the UK. People use it as a perfume base, in a skin-care routine and in evening diffuser blends, and it is gentle enough for everyday use when diluted.

What it is and where it comes from

Patchouli is a tropical plant native to Southeast Asia. dōTERRA sources it from Indonesia, the world’s main producer. The leaves are harvested, dried and often lightly fermented before distillation, which develops the aroma. The result is a thick, amber oil.

Historically patchouli leaves were packed with silk and textiles shipped from Asia to Europe to keep moths away, and buyers learned to recognise the scent as a sign of genuine eastern fabric. That is one reason patchouli later became a fashionable perfume note.

Aroma

Earthy, sweet and musky, with a woody, slightly spicy undertone. Fresh patchouli can smell a little green and sharp; with age it becomes rounder and darker. It is a base note: it evaporates slowly and fixes lighter oils, so blends with patchouli last much longer.

How people use it

In the diffuser. Patchouli is best in the evening, in small amounts with lighter partners:

Blend Drops When
Patchouli + Ylang Ylang 1 + 2 Relaxed evening
Patchouli + Bergamot 1 + 3 After dinner
Patchouli + Wild Orange 1 + 3 Afternoon in the living room
Patchouli + Lavender 1 + 3 Before bed

As a perfume base. A simple roll-on: one to two drops of patchouli, two drops of bergamot and one of ylang ylang in 10 ml of fractionated coconut oil. Patchouli carries the scent through the day.

In a skin-care routine. Many people add a drop to a palmful of unscented cream or to a facial oil blend. Dilution matters more than quantity: one to two drops per 10 ml of carrier oil is enough.

Around the house. A few drops on a wooden diffuser block or cotton pad in a wardrobe or drawer, following the old textile tradition.

Safety

Patchouli is regarded as one of the gentler oils, but basic rules still apply:

  • Dilute for skin: one to two drops per 10 ml of carrier oil for adults; less for sensitive skin.
  • Patch-test first: one diluted drop on the inner arm, wait 24 hours.
  • For children, diffuse lightly in a ventilated room rather than applying it.
  • In pregnancy, while breastfeeding or if you take medication, ask your doctor first.
  • Keep it away from eyes; if it gets into an eye, rinse with plenty of lukewarm water for 15–20 minutes and seek medical advice.
  • Follow the label of your country.

Is it worth the price?

A 15 ml bottle holds about 250 drops, so at $33 a drop costs roughly 13 cents. Since you usually use only one or two drops in a blend, and the oil keeps for years, it is one of the better-value oils for anyone who makes their own scents.

Patchouli quality varies hugely on the open market, from harsh, freshly distilled oil to carefully aged lots, and adulteration is common. dōTERRA publishes the test results for each batch at sourcetoyou.com, where you can enter the lot number from your bottle.

What to pair it with

Patchouli is not in a starter kit. It needs partners to show its best side. For a sensual floral blend, combine it with Ylang Ylang or Geranium. To lift it, add citrus: Bergamot, Wild Orange or Grapefruit. For a deep, grounding evening scent, try it with Vetiver, Frankincense or Cedarwood. And if you already own Lavender, you have the easiest starting pair.

Where to buy it

Buy directly from dōTERRA under your market’s terms: you pay the price in the table above, the parcel ships from the regional warehouse under your country’s rules, and you know exactly what is in the bottle. If your country is not an official dōTERRA market, you order through Global Access: the parcel ships from the US via a forwarding intermediary, with extra shipping and customs costs. Marketplace bottles at half price are a gamble; here is how to spot a fake. A wholesale account saves 25% on every order. Questions and answers

How much does dōTERRA Patchouli cost?

In the US a 15 ml bottle is $33.00 wholesale and $44.00 retail; in the UK it is £32.75 wholesale and £43.67 retail. The table above lists ten countries from the official October 2026 price lists.

Does Patchouli really smell like the 1970s?

Many people associate it with incense shops and hippie fashion. Diluted and blended, though, good patchouli smells richer and softer: earthy, sweet and slightly chocolatey rather than dusty.

Does Patchouli oil go off?

Unlike citrus oils, patchouli tends to improve with age; many users find it smoother after a year or two. Keep it tightly capped, away from heat and light.

Can I use Patchouli on my skin?

Yes, diluted. It is considered a gentle oil; one to two drops per 10 ml of carrier oil or a drop in your usual cream is a common starting point. Patch-test first.

What does Patchouli blend well with?

Ylang Ylang, Bergamot, Wild Orange, Lavender, Vetiver and Frankincense. Use it as the base: one drop of patchouli with two or three drops of a lighter oil.
