Spearmint is the mint most of us know from chewing gum and garden tea: sweet, round and friendly. Its essential oil keeps that character, and it is a good choice if peppermint smells too sharp or too icy to you.

In short: spearmint oil (Mentha spicata) is steam-distilled from the leaves of the spearmint plant. A 15 ml bottle costs $31 wholesale in the US and £32.75 in the UK. People use it in the diffuser with citrus and lavender, in the kitchen where the label allows, and diluted on skin; the one rule to remember is to keep it away from the eyes.

What it is and where it comes from

Spearmint is a perennial herb of the mint family that spreads quickly in any garden. The aromatic leaves are harvested and steam-distilled to produce the oil. Unlike peppermint, which is rich in menthol, the main component of spearmint is carvone, the same compound that gives caraway its character. Carvone is what makes the scent sweeter, softer and a little herbal.

dōTERRA tests every batch of its oils, and the results for your lot number are published at sourcetoyou.com.

Aroma

Sweet, green and gently minty, with a rounded, almost candy-like top and a fresh herbal finish. It is noticeably less cooling than peppermint, so it works in rooms where a strong menthol note would be too much. Many people describe it as “mint for people who find peppermint too sharp”.

How people use it

In the diffuser. Two or three drops are enough on their own; in a blend it works as a bright, friendly accent:

Blend Drops When
Spearmint + Lemon 2 + 3 Morning, kitchen or desk
Spearmint + Lavender 2 + 2 Calm evening at home
Spearmint + Wild Orange 2 + 3 Afternoon, living room
Spearmint + Tangerine 2 + 3 Light, sweet scent for a family room

In the kitchen. Where the label for your country allows food use, spearmint is a lovely way to flavour fruit salads, yoghurt, iced tea, lemonade or a chocolate dessert. Dip a toothpick in the bottle and stir it in; one dip is usually plenty, so start small.

On skin. Diluted at one to two drops per 10 ml of carrier oil, it is used in simple massage oils and in a refreshing blend for tired legs after a long day. Keep it away from the face and eyes.

Around the house. A drop on a cotton pad in a drawer, on a wooden diffuser block or in a spray bottle with water gives a light, minty freshness without the sharpness of peppermint.

Safety

Spearmint is among the milder oils, but the usual rules apply:

  • Dilute for skin: one to two drops per 10 ml of carrier oil.
  • Patch-test on the inner arm and wait 24 hours if your skin is sensitive.
  • Keep it away from eyes and mucous membranes.
  • In pregnancy, while breastfeeding or with medical conditions, ask a doctor first.
  • Keep the bottle out of reach of children, and diffuse only lightly and briefly around small children.
  • Pets, especially cats and birds, are sensitive to essential oils; ventilate the room and give animals a way out.
  • Use it in food only if your country’s label allows it, and in tiny amounts.

Is it worth the price?

A 15 ml bottle holds about 250 drops, so at $31 a drop costs roughly 12 cents (about 13 pence at £32.75). A diffuser session of three drops comes to around 37 cents. That puts spearmint in the middle of the range: more than Lemon or Wild Orange, but a bottle lasts a long time because you need so little in a blend.

If you already own Peppermint and like it, you may not need both. If peppermint is too strong for your household, spearmint is the gentler alternative and earns its place. dōTERRA tests every batch, and the lot number results are at sourcetoyou.com.

What to pair it with

Spearmint is not in a starter kit, and it is easy to combine. Its closest relative is Peppermint; use the two together for a mint blend with a sweeter, softer edge. For a clean, bright room scent, add Lemon, and for a calmer evening, Lavender. Citrus such as Wild Orange rounds off the sweetness.

If you are just starting out, the first five oils for your home is a good base before adding more specialised bottles.

Where to buy it

Buy directly from dōTERRA under your market’s terms: you pay the price in the table above, the parcel ships from the regional warehouse under your country’s rules, and the label tells you whether food use is allowed where you live. If your country is not an official dōTERRA market, you order through Global Access: the parcel ships from the US via a forwarding intermediary, with extra shipping and customs costs. Marketplace bottles at half price are a gamble; here is how to spot a fake. Pick your country on the home page to open the official form with the wholesale price, or ask us if anything is unclear.

Questions and answers

How much does dōTERRA Spearmint cost?

In the US a 15 ml bottle is $31.00 wholesale and $41.33 retail; in the UK it is £32.75 wholesale and £43.67 retail. The table above lists nine countries from the official October 2026 price lists.

How many drops are in a 15 ml bottle of Spearmint?

About 250 drops. At two or three drops per diffuser session, one bottle covers many weeks of daily use.

How is Spearmint different from Peppermint?

Spearmint is sweeter and much milder, because its main component is carvone and it has far less menthol. People who find peppermint too sharp or too cooling often prefer it.

How do I dilute Spearmint for skin?

Use one to two drops per 10 ml of carrier oil, patch-test on the inner arm first, and keep it away from the eyes. In pregnancy or with medical conditions, ask a doctor before using it.

What does Spearmint blend well with?

Citrus oils such as Lemon, Wild Orange and Tangerine, and Lavender. It also softens a Peppermint blend if you want a gentler mint note.
