Marjoram is the oil that people with stiff shoulders tend to fall for. It has a warm, comforting herbal smell, softer and sweeter than its cousin oregano, and it is gentle enough to become a regular part of an evening massage or wind-down routine.
In short: sweet marjoram (Origanum majorana), steam-distilled from the leaves, with a warm, herbal, slightly sweet aroma. It costs $24 wholesale in the US and £24.50 in the UK. People use it in diluted massage after sport or desk work, in the evening diffuser and, where the label allows, in cooking.
What it is and where it comes from
Sweet marjoram is a Mediterranean herb from the mint family, grown for centuries as a culinary herb and garden plant. The ancient Greeks and Romans associated it with happiness and wove it into wedding wreaths. The oil is steam-distilled from the leaves and flowering tops. Read the label of your bottle for the current origin.
Its main aromatic compounds are terpinen-4-ol and sabinene hydrate, with some linalool. Unlike oregano, it contains almost no carvacrol, which is why it is so much milder on the skin and nose.
Aroma
Warm, herbal and slightly spicy, with a sweet, almost woody softness. It smells like the dried herb but rounder and less dusty. In blends it adds a comforting, “home-cooked” warmth.
How people use it
For massage. The most common use. Two to three drops in 10 ml of a carrier oil for shoulders, neck, lower back or calves after a workout, a hike or hours at a laptop. Marjoram combines well with Cypress and Lavender; it is also one of the oils in the ready-made AromaTouch massage blend.
In the diffuser. Marjoram is an evening oil:
| Blend | Drops | When |
|---|---|---|
| Marjoram + Lavender | 2 + 3 | Before bed |
| Marjoram + Cedarwood | 2 + 2 | Quiet evening |
| Marjoram + Wild Orange | 2 + 3 | Late afternoon |
| Marjoram + Bergamot | 2 + 2 | After a busy day |
In the kitchen. Only where your label allows internal use. In the US, marjoram is labelled as a dietary supplement and people add a toothpick-dip to tomato sauce, soups, stuffing or roast vegetables. One drop is equivalent to a lot of dried herb, so start very small.
In the bath. Mix three to four drops into a spoon of carrier oil or bath salt before adding to the water.
Safety
- Dilute for skin use: two to three drops per 10 ml of carrier for adults.
- Patch-test first: one diluted drop on the inner arm, wait 24 hours.
- Pregnancy: ask a doctor before any use; many references advise caution.
- Children: diffuse only at low dose; for skin use with older children, halve the adult dilution.
- Keep away from eyes and mucous membranes.
- If you take regular medication or have low blood pressure, ask a doctor before regular use.
- Internal use only where your country’s label allows it.
Is it worth the price?
A 15 ml bottle holds about 250 drops, so $24 works out at roughly 10 cents a drop, and a massage blend at 20–30 cents. Compared with ready-made massage oils, it is inexpensive and you control what goes in. Marjoram is sometimes confused or blended with Spanish marjoram (a thyme species) or with cheaper oregano types; dōTERRA tests every batch and publishes the results for your lot number at sourcetoyou.com.
What to pair it with
Marjoram is not in Home Essentials or Family Essentials. For massage, pair it with the kit’s Lavender and Peppermint, or with Cypress, Ginger and Black Pepper for a warming blend. If you prefer a ready-made option, Deep Blue and AromaTouch are the obvious neighbours. For the evening diffuser, Cedarwood and Roman Chamomile complement it well. Do not forget a carrier oil; it is the one thing every massage blend needs.
Where to buy it
Buy directly from dōTERRA under your market’s terms at the price shown above. The parcel ships from the regional warehouse under your country’s rules. If your country is not an official dōTERRA market, you order through Global Access: the parcel ships from the US via a forwarding intermediary, with extra shipping and customs costs. Marketplace bottles are a gamble; here is how to spot a fake. Pick your country on the home page to open the official form with the wholesale price, or ask us if anything is unclear.
Questions and answers
How much does dōTERRA Marjoram cost?
In the US a 15 ml bottle is $24.00 wholesale and $32.00 retail; in the UK £24.50 / £32.68. The table above lists ten countries from the official October 2026 price lists.
What is the difference between Marjoram and Oregano?
They are close relatives, but marjoram (Origanum majorana) is much softer: warm, sweet and herbal, and gentle enough for diluted massage. Oregano is hot, sharp and needs very strong dilution.
How do I use Marjoram for massage?
Mix two to three drops into 10 ml of a carrier oil and massage the shoulders, neck or calves after sport or a long day at a desk. It is a comfort routine; persistent pain is a reason to see a doctor.
Can I use Marjoram during pregnancy?
Ask your doctor first. Many aromatherapy references advise caution with marjoram in pregnancy, so it is better to avoid it unless you have medical approval.
How long does a bottle of Marjoram last?
A 15 ml bottle holds about 250 drops. Used in a massage blend two or three times a week and occasionally in the diffuser, it lasts four months or more.
