Cypress is the oil people buy when they want something that smells like the outdoors without being sharp or medicinal. It is fresh, green and a little smoky, and it fits easily into massage blends, sports kit and daytime diffuser mixes.
In short: Mediterranean cypress (Cupressus sempervirens), steam-distilled from twigs and leaves, with a clean, green-woody aroma. It costs $19 wholesale in the US and £19.50 in the UK, and is mostly used in diluted leg and foot massage after a long day, in the diffuser with citrus, and to freshen sports bags.
What it is and where it comes from
Cupressus sempervirens is the tall, narrow evergreen that lines roads and cemeteries across Italy, Greece and the rest of the Mediterranean. The oil is steam-distilled from the young twigs and needle-like leaves. Check the label of your bottle for the current country of origin; dōTERRA sources several conifer oils from different growing regions over time.
The aroma comes mainly from alpha-pinene and delta-3-carene, the same light, fresh compounds that give pine forests their smell. They evaporate fairly quickly, so cypress feels airy rather than heavy.
Aroma
Green, resinous and clean, with a dry woody base and a hint of smoke. It is less sweet than cedarwood and softer than eucalyptus. Many people find it an easy “neutral” scent that men and women both like.
How people use it
In the diffuser. Cypress shines in daytime blends, especially with citrus:
| Blend | Drops | When |
|---|---|---|
| Cypress + Wild Orange | 2 + 3 | Morning, kitchen |
| Cypress + Lemon | 2 + 2 | Freshening a room |
| Cypress + Juniper Berry | 2 + 2 | Study or office |
| Cypress + Lavender | 2 + 3 | Evening |
For massage. The most common use is a diluted leg or foot massage after a long day standing or walking: two to three drops in 10 ml of a carrier oil, worked upwards from the ankles. Treat it as a pleasant end-of-day routine, not as a remedy. Swollen, painful or discoloured legs are a reason to see a doctor, not to reach for an oil.
After sport. Many people add cypress to a post-workout massage oil alongside Marjoram, or use the ready-made AromaTouch blend, which already contains cypress.
Around the house. Two or three drops on a cotton pad tucked into a sports bag, shoe cupboard or gym locker. Diluted with water and a little alcohol, it makes a fresh-smelling room spray.
Safety
- Dilute for skin use: two to three drops per 10 ml of carrier for adults.
- Patch-test first: one diluted drop on the inner arm, wait 24 hours.
- Pregnancy: ask a doctor before any use; many references advise caution.
- Children: diffuse only, at low dose, in a ventilated room; do not apply to young children’s skin.
- Keep away from eyes and mucous membranes.
- Like other conifer oils, cypress oxidises with time; keep the cap tight, store it away from heat and light, and use within about two years.
- Follow the label of your bottle: it is written for aromatic and topical use.
Is it worth the price?
A 15 ml bottle holds about 250 drops, so $19 works out at roughly 8 cents a drop, and a massage blend at 16–24 cents. That puts cypress among the affordable oils. As with any conifer oil, cheap versions may be cut with turpentine-type pine fractions that smell harsher. dōTERRA tests every batch, and the results for your lot number are public at sourcetoyou.com.
What to pair it with
Cypress is not in Home Essentials or Family Essentials, but it works well with several kit oils. For fresh daytime blends combine it with Lemon or Wild Orange; for a woody evening, with Lavender or Cedarwood. If you like the outdoorsy profile, Juniper Berry and Grapefruit make it brighter. For massage, a bottle of fractionated coconut oil is the one thing you really need alongside it. If you are still choosing a kit, read which dōTERRA kit to choose first and add cypress to the same order.
Where to buy it
Buy directly from dōTERRA under your market’s terms at the price shown above. The parcel ships from the regional warehouse under your country’s rules. If your country is not an official dōTERRA market, you order through Global Access: the parcel ships from the US via a forwarding intermediary, with extra shipping and customs costs. Marketplace bottles at half price are a gamble; here is how to spot a fake. Pick your country on the home page to open the official form with the wholesale price, or ask us if anything is unclear.
Questions and answers
How much does dōTERRA Cypress cost?
In the US a 15 ml bottle is $19.00 wholesale and $25.33 retail; in the UK £19.50 / £26.00. The table above lists ten countries from the official October 2026 price lists.
What does Cypress smell like?
Fresh, green and woody, a little like a walk through a pine or cypress grove, with a faintly smoky, resinous edge. It is cleaner and less sweet than cedarwood.
How do people use Cypress for their legs?
Many people mix two to three drops into 10 ml of a carrier oil and use it for a gentle leg massage after a long day on their feet. It is a comfort and aroma routine, not a treatment for any circulation problem; see a doctor for swelling or pain.
Can I use Cypress during pregnancy?
Ask your doctor or midwife first. Many aromatherapy references advise caution with cypress in pregnancy, so it is better to skip it or use it only diffused after medical advice.
How long does a bottle of Cypress last?
A 15 ml bottle holds about 250 drops. Used two or three drops at a time in the diffuser or in a massage blend a few times a week, it lasts three to four months.
