Juniper Berry is the oil for people who like the smell of a pine forest with a twist of something sharper. It has a crisp, resinous, gin-like note that feels clean and a little masculine, and it adds lift to woody and citrus blends.
In short: common juniper (Juniperus communis), steam-distilled from the berries, with a fresh, woody, gin-like aroma. A 5 ml bottle costs $23 wholesale in the US and £23.50 in the UK. People use it in the diffuser with cypress or citrus, as part of a men’s scent and in home cleaning. It is not for use in pregnancy.
What it is and where it comes from
The common juniper is a hardy evergreen shrub that grows across Europe, northern Asia and North America. Its blue-black “berries” are actually tiny cones, and they take two to three years to ripen. They are crushed and steam-distilled to produce the oil. Read the label of your bottle for the current origin.
The aroma is dominated by alpha-pinene, sabinene and myrcene, the same bright, resinous compounds found in pine and cypress, plus small amounts of terpinen-4-ol that give it a subtle spicy edge.
Aroma
Fresh, green and resinous, with a peppery, slightly fruity note and the unmistakable crispness of gin. It is lighter than cedarwood and drier than citrus. Many men like it as a clean, unfussy personal scent.
How people use it
In the diffuser. Juniper Berry is strongest in combination:
| Blend | Drops | When |
|---|---|---|
| Juniper Berry + Cypress | 2 + 2 | Office or study |
| Juniper Berry + Grapefruit | 2 + 3 | Morning freshness |
| Juniper Berry + Lime | 2 + 2 | Summer evening |
| Juniper Berry + Cedarwood | 2 + 2 | Cosy winter evening |
As a personal scent. For a simple men’s roller blend, mix four drops of juniper berry, three of cedarwood and two of bergamot in 10 ml of jojoba. Apply to the wrists or neck, in the evening if bergamot is in the mix.
Around the house. Add five to eight drops to a 250 ml glass spray bottle of water with a little vinegar or alcohol for wiping surfaces, or to a cotton pad in the bin cupboard. It pairs well with lemon in cleaning.
On skin. Diluted only: one to two drops per 10 ml of a carrier oil for a fresh-smelling massage or body oil.
Safety
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding: avoid.
- Dilute for skin use: one to two drops per 10 ml of carrier for adults.
- Patch-test first: one diluted drop on the inner arm, wait 24 hours.
- Children: diffuse only at low dose; do not apply to young children’s skin.
- Kidney conditions or regular medication: ask a doctor before use.
- Like other conifer-type oils it oxidises; keep the cap closed and store it cool and dark.
- Follow the label of your country; internal use only where it is explicitly allowed.
Is it worth the price?
Juniper Berry comes in a 5 ml bottle with about 85 drops, so $23 works out at roughly 27 cents a drop. That is noticeably more than cedarwood or cypress, but most uses need only two drops, so a blend costs about 55 cents. Juniper oil is also often adulterated with cheaper oils distilled from twigs and needles rather than berries. dōTERRA publishes the test results for each lot at sourcetoyou.com.
What to pair it with
Juniper Berry is not in Home Essentials or Family Essentials. It sits naturally next to Cypress and Cedarwood for woody blends, and next to Grapefruit, Lime and the kit’s Lemon for fresh ones. For a men’s scent, add Bergamot or Vetiver. If you use it mostly for cleaning, a bigger and cheaper bottle of Lemon or Purify will do most of the work, with juniper as a finishing note.

Questions and answers
How much does dōTERRA Juniper Berry cost?
In the US a 5 ml bottle is $23.00 wholesale and $30.67 retail; in the UK £23.50 / £31.33. Note the smaller bottle: 5 ml holds about 85 drops. The table above lists ten countries from the official October 2026 price lists.
Does Juniper Berry smell like gin?
Yes. Juniper berries are the main botanical in gin, so the oil has that same crisp, resinous, slightly peppery note, with a fresh woody background.
Can I use Juniper Berry during pregnancy?
No. Juniper berry is traditionally avoided in pregnancy, so skip it entirely while pregnant or breastfeeding unless your doctor says otherwise.
Is Juniper Berry the same as Cedarwood?
They are related but not the same. dōTERRA Cedarwood comes from the wood of Juniperus virginiana; Juniper Berry is distilled from the berries of the common juniper, Juniperus communis, and smells fresher and more resinous.
How long does a 5 ml bottle of Juniper Berry last?
About 85 drops. Used two drops at a time in diffuser blends a few times a week, it lasts two to three months; in cleaning sprays it goes faster.
