Grapefruit is the citrus for people who find orange too sweet and lemon too sharp. It smells like the moment you cut into the fruit at breakfast: bright, tangy and slightly bitter, with a juicy sweetness behind it. It is inexpensive, cheerful and very easy to use.

In short: grapefruit (Citrus × paradisi), cold-pressed from the peel, with a bright, tangy-sweet aroma. It costs $20 wholesale in the US and £20 in the UK, and is used mostly in the morning diffuser, for kitchen cleaning and in fresh blends with peppermint. As a citrus oil it needs a little care with sun and plastics.

What it is and where it comes from

Grapefruit is a natural cross between sweet orange and pomelo that appeared in the Caribbean in the 18th century. Its oil sits in tiny glands in the coloured part of the peel and is extracted by cold-pressing, the same mechanical process used for lemon and wild orange. No heat or solvents are involved. Read the label of your bottle for the current origin.

Like most citrus oils, grapefruit is mostly limonene. Its characteristic smell, though, comes from tiny amounts of nootkatone and sulphur compounds that give the fruit its unmistakable bitter-fresh note.

Aroma

Bright, tangy and juicy, with a pleasant bitterness that makes it feel more grown-up than orange. It is lighter and less “cleaning-product” than lemon. Because it evaporates fast, the scent is lively but does not linger for hours.

How people use it

In the diffuser. Grapefruit is a morning oil:

Blend Drops When
Grapefruit + Peppermint 3 + 2 Morning, start of work
Grapefruit + Lime 3 + 2 Kitchen, after cooking
Grapefruit + Cypress 3 + 2 Living room, fresh air feeling
Grapefruit + Bergamot 3 + 2 Late afternoon

Around the house. Grapefruit is a cheap, pleasant way to scent cleaning. Add ten drops to a glass spray bottle with 250 ml of water, a splash of white vinegar or alcohol and a drop of washing-up liquid to help it mix, and use it on counters and hob surfaces. A drop on a cloth also helps lift sticker residue from glass.

On skin. Diluted in a carrier oil (two to three drops per 10 ml) for a fresh body oil or massage, ideally in the evening. A drop in an unscented shower gel is a popular morning habit.

In water. Only where your label allows internal use. In the US many people add a drop to a glass bottle of water; always use glass or stainless steel, never polystyrene cups.

Safety

  • Sun: grapefruit is mildly photosensitising. To be safe, keep treated skin out of strong sun and tanning beds for 12 hours.
  • Dilute for skin use: two to three drops per 10 ml of carrier.
  • Plastics: undiluted citrus oil can damage some plastics and varnishes; use glass for blends and wipe spills.
  • Citrus oils oxidise with time and oxidised oil is more likely to irritate; keep the cap tight and use within about a year.
  • Keep away from eyes. For children, diffuse at low dose.
  • Pregnancy or medication: ask a doctor before internal use. Follow the label of your country.

Is it worth the price?

A 15 ml bottle holds about 250 drops, so $20 works out at roughly 8 cents a drop, and a morning in the diffuser at 25–30 cents. That is cheap for an oil that lifts a room this quickly. Cheap citrus oils are often diluted or made from distilled rather than cold-pressed peel and smell flat. dōTERRA publishes the test results for each lot at sourcetoyou.com.

What to pair it with

Grapefruit is not in Home Essentials or Family Essentials, but it is a natural partner for several kit oils: Peppermint for focus, Lemon and Wild Orange for a full citrus mix. For something fresher, add Cypress or Juniper Berry; for a sweet citrus blend that already contains grapefruit, look at Citrus Bliss. If you are building your first order, the first five oils for your home is a good shortlist to add it to.

Where to buy it

Buy directly from dōTERRA under your market’s terms at the price shown above. The parcel ships from the regional warehouse under your country’s rules. If your country is not an official dōTERRA market, you order through Global Access: the parcel ships from the US via a forwarding intermediary, with extra shipping and customs costs. Marketplace bottles at half price are a gamble; here is how to spot a fake. Pick your country on the home page to open the official form with the wholesale price, or ask us if anything is unclear.

Questions and answers

How much does dōTERRA Grapefruit cost?

In the US a 15 ml bottle is $20.00 wholesale and $26.67 retail; in the UK £20.00 / £26.68. The table above lists ten countries from the official October 2026 price lists.

Is Grapefruit oil photosensitive?

Grapefruit is usually considered only mildly photosensitising, much less than lime or bergamot. To be safe, avoid strong sun and tanning beds on skin where you applied it for 12 hours, or apply it only in the evening.

Can I put Grapefruit oil in a plastic bottle?

Better not. Undiluted citrus oils can soften or cloud some plastics, especially polystyrene. Use glass or PET bottles for sprays and water, and wipe drips off plastic surfaces.

What can I mix Grapefruit with in the diffuser?

It goes with almost any oil. Popular pairings are peppermint for a clear morning, lime or lemon for an extra-bright citrus, and cypress or juniper berry for a fresh, outdoorsy scent.

How long does a bottle of Grapefruit last?

A 15 ml bottle holds about 250 drops. Used three or four drops most mornings in a diffuser it lasts around two months; citrus oils are best used within about a year of opening anyway.
