Vetiver is the oil people either love at first sniff or need a few tries to understand. It smells of damp earth, roots and smoke, and it is so thick that it pours more like honey than like oil. A single drop changes a whole blend, which is why perfumers have valued it for centuries.
In short: vetiver (Vetiveria zizanioides, also listed as Chrysopogon zizanioides) is distilled from the roots of a tall tropical grass. It costs $66 wholesale in the US and £66.76 in the UK, is used mostly in the evening diffuser and as a base note in home-made perfume, and goes a long way because you rarely need more than a drop.
What it is and where it comes from
Vetiver is a clump grass whose roots grow deep into the soil, sometimes several metres down. The roots are dug up, washed, dried and steam-distilled slowly, which yields a dark amber, very viscous oil. dōTERRA sources its vetiver from Haiti, one of the traditional growing regions, as part of its Co-Impact Sourcing programme with local farmers and distillers.
The roots are also used to stabilise soil against erosion, and in South Asia they have long been woven into mats and screens that release a cool, earthy scent when sprinkled with water.
Aroma
Deep, earthy and smoky, with a woody, slightly sweet undertone. Straight from the bottle it can feel heavy; diluted or blended it becomes softer and almost velvety. It is a classic base note: it evaporates slowly and holds lighter oils in place, so a blend with vetiver lasts longer on a scarf or on skin.
How people use it
In the diffuser. Vetiver is an evening oil. Because it is thick, add it to a diffuser with plenty of water and clean the unit afterwards so residue does not build up. One drop with a lighter partner is usually enough:
| Blend | Drops | When |
|---|---|---|
| Vetiver + Lavender | 1 + 3 | Before bed |
| Vetiver + Wild Orange | 1 + 3 | Quiet evening at home |
| Vetiver + Frankincense | 1 + 2 | Reading or journalling |
| Vetiver + Bergamot | 1 + 2 | Winding down after work |
As a perfume base. Many people make a simple roll-on: one drop of vetiver, two of bergamot or ylang ylang and a drop of a floral oil in 10 ml of fractionated coconut oil. Vetiver anchors the blend and keeps it on the skin for hours.
On skin. Diluted at one to two drops per 10 ml of carrier oil, vetiver is used in an evening foot or shoulder massage, or a drop is added to an unscented body lotion.
Practical tip. If the drop will not come out, warm the bottle in your palms first. Store it upright with the cap tight; vetiver keeps very well and many say it rounds out with age.
Safety
Vetiver is considered a gentle oil, but it is still concentrated:
- Dilute it for skin: one to two drops per 10 ml of carrier oil for adults, less for sensitive skin.
- Patch-test first: one diluted drop on the inner arm, wait 24 hours.
- For children, diffuse it lightly in a ventilated room rather than applying it.
- In pregnancy, while breastfeeding or with medical conditions, ask your doctor first.
- Keep it away from eyes and the inside of the ears; if it gets into an eye, rinse with plenty of lukewarm water for 15–20 minutes and seek medical advice.
- Follow the label printed for your country; usage instructions differ between markets.
Is it worth the price?
At $66 for 15 ml (about 250 drops), one drop of vetiver costs around 26 cents. That sounds expensive until you notice how little you use: one drop in the diffuser, one drop in a 10 ml perfume roll-on. In practice a bottle outlasts most cheaper oils.
Real vetiver takes time to produce: the roots grow for more than a year before harvest and the distillation is long. Very cheap “vetiver” is often a synthetic accord or cut with other oils. dōTERRA publishes the purity test results for each batch at sourcetoyou.com, so you can check the lot number on your bottle.
What to pair it with
Vetiver is not in any starter kit, so it is worth thinking about what you will blend it with. It shines next to bright or floral oils that lift its heaviness: Lavender, Wild Orange, Bergamot and Ylang Ylang. For a woody, grounding evening scent, try it with Cedarwood, Frankincense or Patchouli. If you already like the blend Balance, you will recognise a similar earthy direction.
If you are just starting out, buy a couple of everyday oils first; the first five oils for your home is a good shortlist, and vetiver makes a good sixth.
Where to buy it
Buy directly from dōTERRA under your market’s terms: you pay the price in the table above, the parcel ships from the regional warehouse under your country’s rules, and you know exactly what is in the bottle. If your country is not an official dōTERRA market, you order through Global Access: the parcel ships from the US via a forwarding intermediary, with extra shipping and customs costs. Vetiver is a favourite target for fakes because it is expensive; here is how to spot a fake dōTERRA bottle. A wholesale account gives you 25% off retail. Questions and answers
How much does dōTERRA Vetiver cost?
In the US a 15 ml bottle is $66.00 wholesale and $88.00 retail; in the UK it is £66.76 wholesale and £89.00 retail. The table above lists ten countries from the official October 2026 price lists.
Why is my Vetiver so thick that it barely comes out?
That is normal for vetiver: it is one of the most viscous essential oils. Warm the bottle in your hands for a minute, hold it upside down and be patient; some people unscrew the orifice reducer and use a dropper or a toothpick.
How long does a bottle of Vetiver last?
A 15 ml bottle holds roughly 250 drops, and because the aroma is so strong most blends need only one drop. Used a few evenings a week in the diffuser, a bottle easily lasts six months or longer.
Can I put Vetiver on my skin?
Yes, diluted. One to two drops per 10 ml of a carrier oil is a comfortable starting point for adults; patch-test first if your skin is reactive, and keep it away from eyes and mucous membranes.
Is Vetiver in a starter kit?
No. Vetiver is not part of Home Essentials or Family Essentials, so you buy it separately. It is a good second-step oil once you already have Lavender, Wild Orange or Frankincense to blend it with.
