Myrrh is one of the oldest aromatic materials people have traded. It was burned as incense in temples, used in Egyptian perfumes and embalming, and carried along the incense routes alongside frankincense. Today it is a quieter, more specialised oil: a deep, earthy note for skin care and meditation, used a drop at a time.

In short: myrrh (Commiphora myrrha), steam-distilled from the resin, with an earthy, smoky, bittersweet aroma. It costs $74 wholesale in the US and £75.76 in the UK, which makes it one of the pricier bottles. People use it in skin-care routines, as a perfume base and with frankincense for meditation. It is not for use in pregnancy.

What it is and where it comes from

Commiphora myrrha is a small, thorny tree of the dry regions of north-east Africa and the Arabian Peninsula. When the bark is cut, it releases a pale resin that hardens into reddish-brown tears. These are collected by hand and steam-distilled. Read the label of your bottle for the current country of origin.

The aroma comes mainly from sesquiterpenes such as furanoeudesmadienes and curzerene, heavy molecules that give myrrh its depth and its staying power on skin and fabric.

Aroma

Earthy, smoky and warm, with a bittersweet, faintly medicinal edge and a hint of mushroom or leather. It is not a “pretty” smell on its own, but in a blend it adds gravity, warmth and an old-world, churchy depth.

How people use it

In skin care. One drop added to a single portion of unscented face cream, or one to two drops in 10 ml of a carrier oil such as jojoba, for a rich facial or hand oil. Many people use it with frankincense as part of an evening routine. Patch-test first.

For meditation and quiet time.

Blend Drops When
Myrrh + Frankincense 1 + 3 Meditation, prayer
Myrrh + Wild Orange 1 + 4 Winter evening
Myrrh + Lavender 1 + 3 Before bed

Myrrh is thick, and some diffusers struggle with it on its own; it works better as one or two drops in a blend.

As a perfume base. Myrrh is a classic fixative. Two drops in a 10 ml roller with bergamot, geranium or ylang ylang anchor the lighter notes and make them last longer.

Historically. Myrrh was burned as incense, used in perfumes and anointing oils, and mentioned in many ancient texts. Those uses are interesting background, not a guide to how to use the oil today.

Safety

  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding: avoid.
  • Dilute for skin use: one to two drops per 10 ml of carrier for adults.
  • Patch-test first: one diluted drop on the inner arm, wait 24 hours.
  • Children: diffuse only, at low dose.
  • If you take blood-sugar or blood-thinning medication, ask a doctor before use.
  • Keep away from eyes.
  • Myrrh is viscous: warm the bottle in your hands and be patient, rather than shaking it.
  • Follow the label of your country.

Is it worth the price?

A 15 ml bottle holds about 250 drops, so $74 works out at roughly 30 cents a drop. Because skin care and blends need just one or two drops, a daily routine costs 30–60 cents, and the bottle lasts a long time. The price reflects a hand-harvested resin from a limited region. Myrrh is also commonly diluted with carrier or solvent; dōTERRA publishes the test results for each lot at sourcetoyou.com.

What to pair it with

Myrrh is not in Home Essentials or Family Essentials. Its natural partner is Frankincense, and together they form the classic resin pair. For skin care, add Geranium or Roman Chamomile; for warm evening blends, Wild Orange or Lavender. In perfume, Patchouli, Vetiver and Bergamot complement its depth.

Questions and answers

How much does dōTERRA Myrrh cost?

In the US a 15 ml bottle is $74.00 wholesale and $98.67 retail; in the UK £75.76 / £101.00. It is one of the more expensive single oils; the table above lists ten countries from the official October 2026 price lists.

What does Myrrh smell like?

Earthy, smoky and bittersweet, with a warm, slightly medicinal resin note. It is deeper and darker than frankincense and is mostly used as a base note in blends.

What is the difference between Myrrh and Frankincense?

Both are tree resins from the same plant family and were traded together for thousands of years. Frankincense is lighter, fresher and more citrusy; myrrh is darker, earthier and more bitter. Many people use them together.

Can I use Myrrh during pregnancy?

No. Myrrh is traditionally avoided in pregnancy and while breastfeeding. Skip it entirely during that time unless your doctor says otherwise.

How long does a bottle of Myrrh last?

A 15 ml bottle holds about 250 drops. Because most uses need one or two drops, it often lasts six months to a year. Myrrh is thick, so let the drops come slowly.
