Tangerine is the citrus oil for people who find orange a little too bright. Its aroma is sweet, soft and round, like the peel of a ripe tangerine at the moment you pull it open, and it is one of the most affordable oils in the range.
In short: tangerine oil (Citrus reticulata) is cold-pressed from the peel of the fruit. A 15 ml bottle costs $16 wholesale in the US and £16.25 in the UK. People use it in the diffuser, in cleaning, and in the kitchen where the label allows; the one rule to remember is that it is photosensitive, so stay out of the sun after putting it on skin.
What it is and where it comes from
Tangerines belong to the mandarin family. The oil is pressed from the peel of the ripe fruit, which is why it is called cold-pressed and not distilled: no heat is needed. Its main component is limonene, the compound responsible for the sweet, fruity top note that most people recognise from citrus peel.
dōTERRA tests every batch of its oils, and the results for your lot number are published at sourcetoyou.com.
Aroma
Sweet, soft citrus, rounder and less sharp than Wild Orange, with a gentle candy-like warmth. It is a friendly scent that rarely divides a household, which is why many families keep a bottle on the kitchen shelf.
How people use it
In the diffuser. Three or four drops on their own make a cheerful, light room scent. In blends it softens sharper oils:
| Blend | Drops | When |
|---|---|---|
| Tangerine + Spearmint | 3 + 2 | Morning, kitchen or desk |
| Tangerine + Lavender | 3 + 2 | Calm evening at home |
| Tangerine + Cinnamon | 3 + 1 | Cosy autumn afternoon |
| Tangerine + Wild Orange + Lemon | 2 + 2 + 2 | Bright, clean scent for the whole house |
In the kids’ room. A short session of two or three drops in a well-ventilated room gives a sweet, friendly scent. Keep it brief, and skip it if anyone in the room seems bothered.
In the kitchen. Where the label for your country allows food use, a drop in a glass of water, in a fruit salad, a dessert or a glaze adds a sweet citrus note. Dip a toothpick in the bottle and stir it in; start small.
For cleaning. A few drops in a spray bottle with water and a little white vinegar or soap make a fresh-smelling surface spray. Test on a hidden spot first, and do not use undiluted citrus oil on stone or varnished surfaces.
Safety
Tangerine is gentle, but as a citrus peel oil it has a few specific rules:
- It is photosensitive: avoid direct sun or UV light on skin for 12 hours after topical use.
- Dilute for skin: one to two drops per 10 ml of carrier oil.
- Patch-test on the inner arm and wait 24 hours if your skin is sensitive.
- Keep it away from eyes and mucous membranes.
- In pregnancy, while breastfeeding or with medical conditions, ask a doctor first.
- Keep the bottle out of reach of children, and diffuse only lightly and briefly around small children.
- Pets, especially cats and birds, are sensitive to essential oils; ventilate the room and give animals a way out.
- Use it in food only if your country’s label allows it, and in tiny amounts.
Is it worth the price?
A 15 ml bottle holds about 250 drops, so at $16 a drop costs roughly 6 cents (about 6.5 pence at £16.25). A four-drop diffuser session comes to around 26 cents. That makes tangerine one of the best-value oils in the range, a very easy first purchase if you want a citrus bottle that is gentler than orange.
If you already own Wild Orange and are happy with it, you may not need both; but if you want something softer, especially for family rooms, tangerine is a small and inexpensive addition. dōTERRA tests every batch, and the lot number results are at sourcetoyou.com.
What to pair it with
Tangerine blends easily with almost everything. Its closest relatives are Wild Orange, Lemon and Grapefruit; mix them for a layered citrus scent. For a mint twist, add Spearmint, and for a calmer evening, Lavender. A single drop of Cinnamon turns it into an autumn scent.
If you are just starting out, the first five oils for your home is a good base before adding more bottles.
Where to buy it
Buy directly from dōTERRA under your market’s terms: you pay the price in the table above, the parcel ships from the regional warehouse under your country’s rules, and the label tells you whether food use is allowed where you live. If your country is not an official dōTERRA market, you order through Global Access: the parcel ships from the US via a forwarding intermediary, with extra shipping and customs costs. Marketplace bottles at half price are a gamble; here is how to spot a fake. Pick your country on the home page to open the official form with the wholesale price, or ask us if anything is unclear.
Questions and answers
How much does dōTERRA Tangerine cost?
In the US a 15 ml bottle is $16.00 wholesale and $21.33 retail; in the UK it is £16.25 wholesale and £21.66 retail. The table above lists nine countries from the official October 2026 price lists.
How many drops are in a 15 ml bottle of Tangerine?
About 250 drops. At three or four drops per diffuser session, one bottle covers many weeks of daily use.
How is Tangerine different from Wild Orange?
Tangerine is sweeter and softer, with less of the sharp zest that Wild Orange has. Both are cold-pressed from the peel, and they blend well together.
Is Tangerine oil photosensitive?
Yes. It is cold-pressed from the peel, so avoid direct sun or UV light on skin for 12 hours after applying it topically. In the diffuser this is not an issue.
What does Tangerine blend well with?
Spearmint, Lavender and Cinnamon are popular partners, and it pairs easily with other citrus such as Wild Orange, Lemon and Grapefruit.
