Cardamom is the spice that makes Scandinavian buns, Indian chai and Arabic coffee smell the way they do. Its essential oil captures that aroma remarkably well: fresh, sweet and spicy at the same time, lighter than you might expect from a spice.
In short: cardamom oil (Elettaria cardamomum) is steam-distilled from the seeds of the green cardamom plant. A 5 ml bottle costs $31 wholesale in the US and £31.75 in the UK. People use it in diffuser blends with citrus, in the kitchen where the label allows, and in diluted massage oils; it is not for the faces of small children.
What it is and where it comes from
Cardamom is a perennial plant in the ginger family, native to the forests of southern India. Its small green pods contain aromatic black seeds, which are distilled for the oil. dōTERRA sources cardamom from Guatemala, today one of the largest cardamom producers in the world. The pods are harvested by hand, often several times a season, which is one reason cardamom is among the more expensive spices.
The oil’s main components are 1,8-cineole, which gives it a fresh, slightly eucalyptus-like lift, and alpha-terpinyl acetate, which brings the sweet, warm spice.
Aroma
Fresh, sweet and spicy, with a cool, almost minty top and a warm, slightly floral body. It is less heavy than clove or cinnamon and blends easily. Many people describe it as “clean spice”.
How people use it
In the diffuser. One to two drops lift a citrus blend and make it more interesting:
| Blend | Drops | When |
|---|---|---|
| Cardamom + Wild Orange | 1 + 4 | Morning in the kitchen |
| Cardamom + Bergamot | 1 + 3 | Afternoon, home office |
| Cardamom + Clove + Wild Orange | 1 + 1 + 3 | Winter evenings |
| Cardamom + Cedarwood | 1 + 3 | Calm reading time |
In the kitchen. Where the label for your country allows food use, cardamom is one of the most rewarding oils to cook with. Dip a toothpick in the bottle and stir it into coffee, chai, rice pudding, cinnamon-bun dough or a curry. Start small; you can always add more.
On skin. Diluted at one to two drops per 10 ml of carrier oil, it is used in a gentle abdominal or chest massage blend for adults, often together with ginger or peppermint. Avoid the face.
At the table. A drop on a wooden diffuser block or cotton pad in the kitchen gives a spicy, bakery-like scent without baking.
Safety
Cardamom is moderate in strength. Concrete rules:
- Dilute for skin: one to two drops per 10 ml of carrier oil for adults.
- Because of 1,8-cineole, do not apply it on or near the face of small children; keep diffusing in their rooms brief and light, or skip it.
- Patch-test on the inner arm and wait 24 hours if your skin is sensitive.
- Keep it away from eyes and mucous membranes.
- In pregnancy, while breastfeeding or with medical conditions, ask a doctor first.
- Use it in food only if your country’s label allows it, and in tiny amounts.
Is it worth the price?
A 5 ml bottle holds about 85 drops, so at $31 a drop costs roughly 36 cents. That makes cardamom one of the pricier oils per drop. Whether it is worth it depends on how you use it: if you love cooking and spiced blends, one drop goes a long way and the bottle lasts months; if you only want a nice room scent, citrus oils are cheaper.
Spice oils are a common target for adulteration. dōTERRA tests every batch and publishes the results for your lot number at sourcetoyou.com.
What to pair it with
Cardamom is not in a starter kit, and it shines most with oils you probably already have or plan to buy. Its best friends are citrus: Wild Orange, Bergamot, Lemon and Grapefruit. For a spice cupboard, combine it with Clove, Black Pepper and Ginger. For a calmer, woody blend, try Cedarwood or Frankincense. If you like its fresh side, Peppermint works too.
If you are just starting out, the first five oils for your home is a good base before adding spices.
Where to buy it
Buy directly from dōTERRA under your market’s terms: you pay the price in the table above, the parcel ships from the regional warehouse under your country’s rules, and the label tells you whether food use is allowed where you live. If your country is not an official dōTERRA market, you order through Global Access: the parcel ships from the US via a forwarding intermediary, with extra shipping and customs costs. Marketplace bottles at half price are a gamble; here is how to spot a fake. Pick your country on the home page to open the official form with the wholesale price, or ask us if anything is unclear.
