Thyme is the kitchen herb most people know from a roast or a tomato sauce, but as an essential oil it is in a different league: concentrated, sharp and powerful. It is not an oil to play with casually. Used with respect, though, it earns a place in the cleaning cupboard and in the occasional diffuser blend.

In short: thyme oil (Thymus vulgaris) is steam-distilled from the leaves and flowers of the common garden thyme. It costs $34 wholesale in the US and £35 in the UK. It has a strong, herbal, almost medicinal scent, is used mainly for home cleaning and in small amounts in the diffuser, and must always be diluted heavily.

What it is and where it comes from

Common thyme is a small woody shrub native to the Mediterranean. The fresh flowering herb is distilled to produce the oil. Its signature compound is thymol, a phenol that gives thyme its intense, warm-medicinal smell and also explains why the oil is so strong on skin. The exact growing region can change from batch to batch, so read the label of your bottle.

Thyme has a long traditional history: it was burned as incense, used in embalming in ancient Egypt and hung in houses for its scent.

Aroma

Powerful, herbal and warm, with a sharp, medicinal edge. In the bottle it can smell almost like a mouthwash; in a blend at one drop, it adds a fresh, green-spicy note. If you can smell it clearly across the room, you have used too much.

How people use it

In the diffuser. One drop is plenty, always mixed with milder oils and only in a ventilated room with adults:

Blend Drops When
Thyme + Lemon 1 + 4 After cooking
Thyme + Rosemary + Wild Orange 1 + 2 + 3 Spring cleaning day
Thyme + Eucalyptus 1 + 3 Fresh air in winter

Cleaning around the house. This is where thyme is most useful. A simple surface spray: 500 ml of water, a splash of white vinegar or alcohol, five drops of lemon and two to three drops of thyme. Shake before each use and test on a hidden spot first, because essential oils can mark some plastics and finishes.

On skin. Rarely, and very diluted. If you want thyme in a massage blend, keep it to one drop per 20 ml of carrier oil for adults and combine it with gentler oils. For skin care, other oils are a better choice.

In the kitchen. Some country labels allow food use; if yours does, use a toothpick dipped in the oil rather than a drop. Many people simply prefer fresh or dried thyme for cooking.

Safety

Thyme belongs to the group of “hot” oils, together with oregano and clove. Concrete rules:

  • Never use it neat on skin. Maximum one drop per 20 ml of carrier oil for adults.
  • Not for children: do not apply it and do not diffuse it in a child’s room.
  • Avoid it in pregnancy and while breastfeeding.
  • Keep it far from eyes, nose and mucous membranes; wash hands after handling.
  • Patch-test any diluted mixture on the inner arm and wait 24 hours.
  • If it irritates, apply a plain carrier oil to the area, not water.
  • With medical conditions or medications, ask a doctor before use. Follow the label of your country.

Is it worth the price?

At $34 for about 250 drops, a drop of thyme costs around 14 cents. Because you use one drop in a diffuser and two or three in a large cleaning bottle, it is one of the more economical oils in daily practice.

Cheap thyme oil is common, and quality varies: thymol content and purity differ a lot. Every dōTERRA batch is tested, and the results for your lot number are public at sourcetoyou.com.

What to pair it with

Thyme is not in a starter kit and is rarely anyone’s first oil. It works best as a supporting player. For cleaning, combine it with Lemon, Lime or Tea Tree; the blends On Guard and Purify cover similar household jobs and are easier to handle. For the diffuser, soften it with Wild Orange, Rosemary or Eucalyptus.

If you are choosing your first oils, start with the gentle everyday ones; see which dōTERRA kit to choose. Add thyme later if you want a stronger cleaning oil.

Where to buy it

Buy directly from dōTERRA under your market’s terms: you pay the price in the table above, the parcel ships from the regional warehouse under your country’s rules, and the bottle comes with the correct local label and safety information. If your country is not an official dōTERRA market, you order through Global Access: the parcel ships from the US via a forwarding intermediary, with extra shipping and customs costs. Marketplace bottles of unknown origin are a gamble; here is how to spot a fake. Pick your country on the home page to open the official form with the wholesale price, or ask us if anything is unclear.

Questions and answers

How much does dōTERRA Thyme cost?

In the US a 15 ml bottle is $34.00 wholesale and $45.33 retail; in the UK it is £35.00 wholesale and £46.67 retail. The table above lists ten countries from the official October 2026 price lists.

Can I put Thyme oil directly on my skin?

No. Thyme is a “hot” oil and should never be used neat. For adults, use no more than one drop per 20 ml of carrier oil, and only after a patch test.

Is Thyme oil safe around children?

Do not apply it to children, and do not diffuse it in a child’s room. For a family home, choose gentler oils such as Lavender or Wild Orange.

What is Thyme oil mostly used for at home?

Most people use it in heavily diluted cleaning sprays for kitchen and bathroom surfaces, and as a single drop in a diffuser blend with citrus or rosemary. A little goes a long way.

How long does a bottle of Thyme last?

A 15 ml bottle holds about 250 drops. Since you use one or two drops at a time, it often lasts a year or more.
